I just bought a 97 xl and 3 of my 4 speakers are blown. I replaced the rears now the front pss. speakers is bugging the crap out of me. I was looking at some new speakers and I'm having trouble finding which ones will work. Somebody please tell me what works with this because this is flat out the worst sounding system ive ever had in any of my cars. I also noticed the fronts and rears are same size , but the pioneers i put in the rear wont fit the front.
There was a thread recently about some new 4.5" speakers made specifically to fit cars like the first generation Avalon. Those would probably be your best bet.
When it comes to speakers, you're pretty much SOL with 4" speakers...not too much will sound good if you like any depth to your music. With the custom made enclosures for the factory speakers, it's not like you can enlarge the hole to fit a 5.25" speaker.

first thing i did a few days ago was to go to cruthfield. I see alot of speakers where they state the reccomended range is something like 5-35watts with a max output of over 100 watts. How much were the stock speakers? weren't they like 20 watts? so im worried if i go with aftermarket, the larget power output will mess up my stock reciever.
Yes, the stock speakers are rated for 20 watts...whether that is continuous or peak, I do not know. The factory amplifier is capable of putting out 170 watts peak, or 42.5 watts per channel...which usually coincides with a continuous rating of 15-20 watts.
This is not much off from current aftermarket headunits, which are able to power most aftermarket speakers fine. With these aftermarket speakers, so long as you do not turn the volume up to a point where it distorts, your factory headunit/amplifier should be fine and not take any damage.

I don't know if the speakers in the 98 XLS are different but they are pretty good. The stock subwoofer is garbage however, but I have 2 MTX now and everything sounds very good actually, I often listen to my music at 3/4 volume and no problems.
They must be different, what kind of music you like? If I were you, I don't know how much you want to spend, or how much you like this car, but look at the Polk speakers, and even Polk subwoofers, or MTX, sony and so on. You can get a great sound system. The best part is that if they fit your next car you can use them in there too.
i had polks in both my old integra....i loved the sound they produced, and they were good quality speakers...very bassy even minus a subwoofer...the headunit made them sound even better as well
but yeah check crutchfield and find speakers for your specific application
