How fast am I supposed to accelerate for better gas mileage?

I know this might really sound dumb, but for me I really want to know. I have a 98 XLS, and I am pretty heavy on the gas I guess. I was just wondering though at how many RPM's should I be accelerating at for normal conditions to get good gas mileage? I am usually only getting 225 miles out of my tank on premium. And no there isn't anything wrong with my car, I did the chevron techron stuff and it was just checked over completely at the dealer and an auto repair shop. So I am guessing I am too heavy on the gas.

225 miles/ 16 gallons = 14MPG.
If you show some restraint you should get 25mpg around
town and 30mpg highway. On regular gas.

No fast starts, keep rpm between 2-3K, brake gently. Essentially driving economically, the Avalon is a heavy car but so long as you drive gently it shouldn't empty the tank quickly.

I just drive it (sometimes like I stole it!) and get 30-ish MPG. Stop thinking so much - go drive it!

Drive like an old lady, thats how you get the best MPG. Obviously the lower the RPM the better your milage is going to be. Of couse that means youll have to give yourself a lot of extra time to get where your going. You would think old people would drive fast since they dont have that much time left...

AHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA

back on point, just drive gently, don't push the accelerator in more than half way, keep revs under 3-3.5k when accelerating, drive at 60-65mph and no faster on the highway. Driving at 80 on the highway all the time will give you some poor mileage

yeah, i dont know why but i get pretty junky gas mileage on my avalon also, and by junky i mean like 21/22 but thats driving half highway and half fairly long straigt between lights "city" driving going around 50 most of the way. i'm easy on the gas for real like no more than 2k, the car has 81k on it, i treat the gas every few tanks, i got a k&n air filter, i just put in that engine restore in a can 1800 mi ago or so, trunk is empty and i keep it clean, nothing is mechanically wrong or anything like that, so as best as i can tell the car just gets that kinda mileage, and theres not much that can be done about it.

Did you try running some Seafoam through it?

Or a fuel injector cleaner?

Haha, or are joking 21 or 22 mixed is good! I'm getting 13 mpg. I might has well have a V12. However I did lay off tonight even though I had 1/4 tank left and I noticed a little bit of a difference.

Keep up with the maintenance work and you should be getting better gas mileage. Accelerate as slow as you can but not slow enough to piss off other drivers, I hate that.

LOL...I had to laugh so loud on that one.

But yep, try avoid 'gas mashing' on the freeway. Of course if your running a I4, then I could see why.

For me, I normally give myself a fair amount of space infront of me to the car infront of me, so if they slow down, i don't have to hit brakes and then gas when they speed up. I just keep a constant very light throttle. When you do that, you should reduce your wear on your brakes and increase gas mileage a bit due to less changes in rev.

I have done the fuel injector cleaner, and will continue to do so, i am going to do the chevron on 4 consecutive tanks and then run premium for a tank after that, and see how things go from there.

I saw that seafoam post and idk, it seems a little sketchy, i was thinking about it for a little, if the above doesnt change it i think i will give it a shot.

and yes jon456 thats fairly bad considering the low mileage of the year and the type of driving and mileage and condition of the car, and you might want to check your calculations on that MPG cause a hummer gets 12mpg and you arent doing too much better.
Your fuel mix might be running a little rich perhaps?

I realized I am getting a little better, because I am not using literally a full tank, even though it says empty it still only takes 14 gallons even though the tank is 18.5, so I am really getting 17ish. Still bad, but I am doing a little better now. If I get 20mpg I'll be happy.
