95 Avalon AC problem

I have a 95 Avalon - nice car - a problem with the AC - sometimes it works great with plenty of cold air - then all of a sudden the cold air will stop. I can't quite figure out a pattern to this. Sometimes it will go an hour before the cold air quits, and sometimes it quits within just a few minutes.

One mechanic thought the compressor was getting "weak," but f that's true why would it work great sometimes? Another mentioned the expansion valve - very expensive repair since the dash has to be pulled out. Maybe it's just a short in an electrical wire somewhere. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Yep, I thought the exact same thing with my 98. Just a short or something. Would work randomly then shut off for days sometiems. The AC amp needed to be replaced. Toyota wanted 1100 bucks, but I took it elsewhere for 600. Still a rediculously expensive repair and a bullshit problem.

Ivory,

I've read that a low refrigerant level can cause your problem. I would have your a/c looked at by a qualified technician.

Good luck.

AC Problem

I have a 98 avalon and there were many tech bulletins on the ac cutting out. Finally, the dealer haggled with toyota and toyota sprung for the parts. cost me 250 for the install. 900.00 if it were install and parts.

Got this from another group. This is what my problem was. The dealer had to bump heads with the toyota rep to okay the 800.00 parts...

This is a very common problem on all late 90's avalons with auto a/c. Common symptoms include:
=A/C int. INOP
=The Ambient Temperature display goes blank or displays "-"
=Fresh/Recirc indicator light INOP
=Mode Indicator Light Inop
=Blower Indicator Light Inop
The Fix for this involves replacing
A/C Amplifier (ECU) Part #88650-41030
Air Inlet Servo Motor Part #87106-07050
Servo Link Part #87151-07010
Labor under warranty payed 2.7hrs If you go to a dealer under CP expect to pay 5 Hrs Labor.
