'98 Avalon XLS Keyless Entry

I just bought a used '98 XLS w/ 115k miles. No remotes and only one key! Gggrrr...

I am buying two remotes and two keys off Ebay. I'll document my attempt to get both the key and remotes to work as I don't see any other info here.

I have heard it's easy to DIY.

This is the remote that ebay folks seem to be suggesting is mine. I hope to secure a second one and program them both at the same time.....

As I don't have a single remote to compare, I am going on faith that this one will work. They assure 100% return if not working, so we'll see. A dealer in Jax, FL told me any Avalon from '98 would work.

I also have to secure keys and program them from what I understand (newby here!)

You are bidding on an OEM used keyless remote that is good for any of the following vehicles:
1998 1999 TOYOTA AVALON
1999 2000 2001 2002 TOYOTA 4RUNNER
2001 2002 2003 Toyota Sequoia

The numbers on the back of your remote need to match these numbers for it to work with your vehicle. The numbers on the back of this remote are:

FCC ID: HYQ1512Y

CAN: 1551 102 578
RSS - 210
Denso

EASY TO FOLLOW PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS ARE INCLUDED WITH THIS AUCTION
This remote may work for other makes/models but consult your local dealer for compatibilty.
Dealers charge a lot for this remote so Here is your chance to save big bucks.Your vehicle must have the factory keyless entry alarm system in order for this factory remote to work. All my remotes include batteries.

I guarantee everything I sell to your complete satisfaction.
Please Feel free to email me anytime with questions. I accept paypal, money orders.
Thanks for looking and good luck.

Ok, got the keys programmed by the instructions that came w/ them. Keys were difficult to 'cut' by the locksmith. Larger/ longer than his equipment typically can cut, but it JUST worked.

Down side is that these new keys appear to be VALET keys as they won't work the glove compartment or trunk.

I am trying to resolve w/ the ebay seller.

The remote programmed, but we had to go thru the steps a few times to get it to accept the remote. Strangely, it works intermittantly and I am not sure why. I will try to get a new battery in it and see if that helps.

I hope the new battery won't require new programming!! Remote was harder to program than the keys.

Thanks for the info leadsled. I bought my 99 with one each remote and keys, and I'd like to get an additional one of each. So you got blank keys as well as remotes from e-bay?

Yes, both remotes and keys from Ebay.

And, I had NO idea what 'code' I needed for my '98, since I didn't have one. But I called a few dealers and they indicated any from any avalon of that year should work. You won't have that problem as you have one remote to look at to verify.

But, based on my experience, don't worry about not 'knowing' what FCC code etc you need.

Keys were tricky to machine. Lowe's wouldn't touch it. Custom locksmith did fine though.

I got mine from My Keyless on ebay. They are BAD about responding to questions in my experience, but they shipped it out fine and on time etc.

I really look forward to how he responds to my questions now that I have issues w/ the key not working in the trunk and glove compartment (valet key?).

I'll update. Till then, I'd consider another source for your key perhaps.

MyKeyless tells me I had my key "cut" as a valet key. I am trying to explain to him that the locksmith tried to exactly duplicate the master, not cut it any differently.

Perhaps the key must be cut at a Toyota dealer or someone who can handle the larger keys. The locksmith did have difficulty w/ it's size.

I WISH I had YOUR DEALER!!! My dealer wants $47/ per key! PLUS $30 programming. With two new remotes it was $450!!!!!!

Maybe I'll come to your town and get new keys made.

My locksmith key doesn't work the glove compartment or trunk. They guy who sold it to me tells me get my other new key cut at the dealer (I hope they'll CUT if for a fair price and not GOUGE me here as well).

The remote I got online worked intermittently and I am returning it for a replacement. WIll see how that goes. I'll keep this thread posted.

The difference may be that I walked in with my key code. They didn't have to "match" the old key. That may be why it was $10 for 2. But I bought my FOB remote on eBay too, and it came with instructions. Worked great. Check out programyouremoye.com. It's all there!

Obtained a second remote FOB from ebay dealer, worked initially but now doesn't just like first one.

I am awaiting his response. I hate to buy another battery if it doesn't solve the problem. Put a new battery inthe first one and forgot to remote it before sending it back to seller.

I am hoping to find out I can clean a sensor or something to solve this.
