Rear view mirror fell off '97

Mirror fell off the windshield but left a silicone pad on the glass. The bond between that pad and the button is what failed. Do I just glue the metal mirror button back to that pad or what?

It looks like 3M structural bonding tape is what was used at the factory. I can't find it locally. Looks like I'll scrape it off and glue the button directly to the glass.

Suggestion

Check with your dealers parts department, I had a customer come in with the same issue and parts was like $7 to fix it properly.

Update: The plastic tab left on the glass seemed pretty sturdy, definately not silicone. So I cleaned it with accetone and alcohol and scuffed up the metal button with steel wool and cleaned it as well.

Spread crazy glue on the button and reglued it to the plastic on the windshield and held it in place with a fat piece of masking tape overnight. Snapped the mirror back on and it seems pretty strong to me. Time will tell.

What was left on the windshield was the old glue. I've always used mirror glue to reinstall them. I dont know if Crazy glue will hold it, especially when it gets hot out. If it falls again, take a razor blade and remove the glue thats on the windshield. I usually mark the outside of the glass for proper placement of the mounting button. Remove the glue, clean it with the cleaner that comes in the mirror glue kit, apply the adhesive to the button and put it on the windshield per the directions. Mirror glue is availabel at any parts store, its not necessary to go to a dealer.
