Erratic Gas Needle

Hello everybody. As the title reads, my gas needle has a mind of its own. When I go around corners it's possible for the needle to drop, when I go up hill it's possible for the needle to drop, and it normally does. Now, there are situations when my needle rises, but shortly after that it drops. Does anybody know what could be causing this, is my gas gauge malfunctioning, or could it have something to do with my engine? I need a tune up but would it really result to this big of a drop in gas mileage? Anybody that can give me some insight as to what is going on I would really be appreciative!

Has you actual gas mileage dropped or just your calculated mileage based on the cars computer (if it has one). Do a MPG calculation based on oddometer reading and gallons put into tank at fill up.

If the gauges erratic motion ties in with the cars motion, it is linked to the fuel sender in the gas tank. This device has a float that moves with the fuel level. As a result a varying voltage is sent to the gauge on the dash. If this float is moving up and down too much, the gauge will move also.

Assess to the float (and fuel pump) is through the top of the tank under the seat. The fuel pump and float are bolted together.

This situation with the gauge has nothing to do with the engine or your real MPG dropping.
