Rear deck removal in 96 avalon

Hey guys,
I am trying to remove the factory sub in my XLS, and to do that I have to remove the rear deck. I found clips at the very back of the deck, accessible from the trunk, but I cut my hand pretty bad trying to unclip them. One snapped, stupid me, should have known 10 yr. old plastic wouldn't bend like new.

I hope I dont have to remove the rear seats...

Any assistance would be appreciated.

-Matt

P.S. While installing my sound system in this car, I'm starting to miss the simplicity of the 89 Civic I had.

You might need to remove the rear upper back seat. Pull up on the front of the bottom rear seat typically held in by two front clips. The back upper seat usually has one bolt on each side at the bottom of the seat. Once out you may be able to start lifting the front of the deck.

I thought it might come to that. The clips I mentioned at the back of the deck probably let the deck lift up and out once the front is lifted.

Well at least removing the seats will give me a chance to clean up the rear seats at the joint (probably recover some lost change haha). I'll try tonight, see how it goes.

BTW, would the Hanyes Manual cover this? I doubt it since it covers the camry and es300 as well. I thought it focuses more on the engine and internals of the cars, not the finishes/interiors. Anyone have a copy and can confirm?

Thanks.

You have to take the rear seat all the way out. Not too bad a job. You can get the dead bugs out of the rear window too!

i really dont think you need to do all of that to remove the sub, cause i took off the cover to mine and it looked like just a few screws and prying the adhiseave off of it would do the job.

The four screws are holding the plastic "unit", which the sub is in. However the plastic unit is too large to pull out after removing the screws. The rear deck is overlapping the sides of the plastic unit.

I don't know how the sub is connected to this plastic unit, hopefully there is another set of screws hidden, that will be visible once the unit is removed. I'd rather not pry the adhesive off if thats what is holding the sub in; i want the removal to be reversible so if I get rid of the car one day(LONG time from now hopefully ) I can put it back in. It works, but I have a set of 10" subs in my trunk that I'd had in previous cars, I'd rather use them. The bottom of the stock sub is interfering with the top of my sub box in the trunk.

Fingers crossed for screws NOT adhesive!
