I should have posted this reply as my first reply.
I'm not sure your technique is the way to go about determining if you are using/leaking oil.
Use the dipstick. Check it often. Is the level dropping off?
After an oil change, let car sit overnight on a level surface. The next morning, check and record the level you see on the stick. That's your "full" mark. Assuming you have added the amt. of oil stated in owners manual AND that you are using a factory filter. The idea is to get everything the way it was when the car came off the line.
Check oil level on stick say every week. Same deal. Let it sit overnight on a level surface. Record level and compare to level the morning after your last change. Any difference?
What's the level look like after 3000 miles?
Some will argue that you should check oil level when hot and after sitting for just a few mins. Some mfgs. started using this approach in the mid-90s. Some will say check level hot, but after sitting for a couple of hours.
For the purposes of determining oil consumption, you can use whatever technique you like as long as your consistent in your approach.
If you are using oil, the next step would be to determine if your motor is "consuming" it or "leaking" it.
And last, but not least, understand that some engines simply use a little more oil than others.
