95 Avalon Noise and vibration when road is wet?

My 95 Avalon has been making very loud whining and vibration (that can even be felt through the transmission shifter) when the roads are wet.

The noise drops off slightly when letting off the throttle but comes back strong when given gas. This only happens when the roads are wet.

I'm suspecting a transmisson problem (even though the car has had the tranny serviced every 2 years since new).

This extreme noise ONLY happens when the roads are wet (runs perfect and quiet on dry roads). The car's speedomoter also seems to be about 10 km/hour off at all times - which also makes me think tranmission.

I plan on having the car checked out next week by a transmission shop. The local Toyota dealer only wants the car in when it's been raining hard (so they can diagnose) Any ideas out there? Has anyone ever experienced this with their Avalon?

Any suggestions would be apppreciated - thanks in advance...Jason.

You may want to have your cv joints looked at, much cheaper than new tranny. Not positive that it is this, but I have had cv problems, and seems to be a semi-common problem with the Avalons.

is it constantly making the noise when the road is wet? i have a similar problem, except it only happens when it rains severely and i drive through puddles. the whole tone of the engine changes and there is a lot of vibration through the whole car. it goes away after awhile. i suspect a slipping belt from the splashes.
