I have a '95 XL and recently drove to Oklahoma. (I actually met up with someone to have them pull it on a trailer the rest of the way in Tn) and had to drive it back. The trip is about 1100 miles one way, and when I was driving, I had ECT on (says it gets less mpg that way, but always kept it on til I discovered that), me driving, and 2 other LARGE people, a full trunk, and no recent fuel injectors. I was getting 30.02 mpg and was generally going about 70-75 mph. My mom (the calm, old lady driver - 45) was getting 29.99 mpg. I actually laughed at the fact I was getting .03 better than her. Since I have gotten fuel injection added in, cleaned my trunk out, and usually just me driving, but haven't been driving "strictly highway" to get actual mpg/highway. Was just wondering what you guys have been getting as far as mileage. It's amazing that ads now are advertising "an amazing 28 mpg highway!" and I was getting over 30 with all the added weight.
I have a 98 XLS subs in the trunk about 100lbs total. Then me, and sometimes a couple friends. Gas mileage in city is terrible with this car, just driving around the suburbs i average anywhere from 16-17.5 probably.
I can agree with that, if you accelerate like a grandma you probably do get 30 MPG, but if you accelerate normal-fast like me then you can expect somewhere around 17 with the 1st gen. at least.
Hey, I am a young one too, lol. I do tend to accelerate fast. I hate when people pass me when starting at a stop light, can't help but to go past them... lol. My friend laughs everytime we are at a red light, cause she knows its just one of my things I hate. I went over 300 miles non-stop and didn't even use half a tank of gas. I love my girl, her name is Avril and she is a rockstar.

When you want sports car handling, you buy a sports car.
I have an '06 and we live in rural Wisc. (Never in a hurry to get anywhere). Our car consistantly gets 32.5 on the freeway at 72mph cruise if there are no headwinds and not too many hills. We get an honest 35 quite often going to the cabin where we set the cruise on 62 mph. Our car seems pretty phenominal compared to some reports out there but I've double checked the dash readings against actual mileage and fuel amount coming from the pump. We have a friend with an 06 that says he consistantly gets 31-32 on trips and I know he drives a bit harder than we do.
Because of our good luck I'm afraid to take it in for the computer upgrade for shifting. I know they can't actually change the gear ratios so it shouldn't affect anything....but I don't think I should mess with perfection.
Yeah, I usually get right at 280 normal driving right when the light starts to tell me I am an idiot for letting it get low. The 300/half gallon was on my way to OK. and was with no stops and straight highway driving.

On my 1996 with 175K miles, I typically get 31 or 32 MPG on the highway with no A/C running @ 65 to 70 MPH. FWIW I use REDLINE synthetic motor oil 10W30. Oh and I now run 87 Octane exclusively, since I can't prove 93 Octane makes in difference in mileage - after 10 years of ownership /measuring.
Around town, not so good - prolly about 12-13MPG less.
Yeah highway, my 98 does get pretty decent gas mileage maybe mid-high 20's but around town truly is bad and thats what almost all my driving consists of. Just out of curiosity is there a certain range you should keep the needle under in the tachometer for better gas mileage while cruising on the highway? Last night I noticed at 70mph with cruise control on the engine revved at about 2400rpm. And 75mph was only 2500 RPM. Then at 80 MPH the engine revs at 2900 RPM. I thought that was a significant jump.
best I've seen on my '06 Ltd is 28mpg on highway at 75 mph. Hard to believe people are getting 30+
Yeah....I too wonder about all of the people who boast 30+ on a reg. basis.
My '06 Avalon gets 27.5 - 28.5 most of the time. Have seen 30.5 once and the car has been reflashed.
Car mfgs. should be required to list "real world" mpg figures and not the stuff they get on a track going 45 mph in perfect weather with the a/c off and a test driver inside sweating his A off with the windows up.

Throttle opening position directly affects mileage. So, for best mileage, a steady 2000 to 2200 RPM will yield best results.
I don't want to imply that I get 31 to 32MPG on a regular basis. These numbers are in fact the exception. Everything has to be perfect = no passengers, no AC, mildly hilly to flat terrain, 65-70MPH.
My poorer around town mileage I think is due to aging O2 Sensors, which are showing a very lazy correction oscillation at idle. But then, I'm not throwing any codes, so I'm not inclined to spend any $$$ on O2 Sensors or injectors for that matter. Both of which are suspect at 175,000 miles......

You might want to try cleaning the MAF sensor and if that doesn't help, clean the IACV.
I have always gotten very good mileage from my '00. I routinely get 29-30mpg driving to/from work, which is 14 miles of half interstate and half stop&go. I can get 33-34 on the highway. I haven't verified the computer lately but I know early on in the life of the car I had checked actual mileage against what the computer reported and it was very close.
