Help with 1998 Avalon remote key entry system

I bought an used 1998 Toyota Avalon XL. The remote key entry (RKE)/ wireless/ keyless system (I don't know how to call it. It has 10,000 different names!) was not activated/ not working, all power locks are working well, and the little beeper/ wireless/ keyless/ remote transmitter (10,000 names!) was missing. I bought another beeper to see if I can make this system works or at least the remote power locks. The beeper show the correct FCC ID. It is not the RS3000/ Gray. I have a set of instructions but after several attempts it did not work.

One of my questions is: how do I determine which system is currently installed in the car, factory installed or a dealer installed? How can I determine if is working?
The other: Anyone has more programming procedures/tips on hand?

Thanks,
\M\

Give this a shot. You may want to try 'rewrite' mode incase your car already has the max # of remotes registered. This is the process for the factory transmitter, btw.

Help on the 1998 Avalon RKE

Thanks a lot. It is the same one I have but not as explicit as this one. This one is excellent. I will try this way since it is more detailed. Do you have any idea how can I determine if the alarm is the factory or dealership-installed? Another Q for you, could it be possible that the previous owners disabled the alarm in any way because they lost the remotes? I do not see any activity on the LED, or anything. Thanks, \M\

I bought a used '95 and the owner before me lost the remote for my car. Should I go to a dealer and have them run my VIN to get a new one, or would it be easier to get an aftermarket one and have it installed? Anyone know how much either would be?

USA Keyless Remote System

I have tried everything but buying an after market keyless, and nothing works. I seriously thinking about just getting an after market, generic-NOT Toyota and have it installed.Good luck,M

Keyless gremlins.

Hello,

Has anyone had this problem? I bought a Keyless remote for my 1998 Avalon XLS, put a new battery in it, and went through the programming process. All goes well, and for some time the Keyless remote works just find. Then one day the remote will lock the car but it will not unlock it, it will not open the trunk, and it will not activate the panic system. I go through the programming process again, and all is well for some time again. Then the keyless remote gremlin attacks, and again the remote only locks the car.
I keep my keys and remotes on a keychain in my pocket. Could I be pressing a combination of buttons that deprograms the remote?

Any on have any ideas as to what I’m doing wrong, or what is causing the problem, and how to fix it?

Thank you,
Roland

PS What is "prohibition mode"?

I also have a 1998 XL and I have tried this method with no luck. I have also tried the method where you "jump" terminal 11 and 12 on the bulb failure warning module buried in the trunk. Unfortunately I do not have a wire coming to terminal 12 to jump to. This is very frustrating. Does anyone know where the Receiver door control is on the 1998. I could not find it in the trunk where another post said it is on the 1995. I do have electric locks that work fine when you do them manually but I must admit the security light next to the "TRAC OFF" button on the left side of the instrument panel has not worked since I bought the car. Maybe the whole system is integrated and none of it is working.

I also have the same situation as you. I have tried both the key in key out method with all the door locking and unlocking and I also tried the Bulb Failure jumper method using wire 11 and 12. I do not have a wire coming to one of those points,so no way to jump. Did you get yours resolved.

Anyone know where the remote sensor is, so I can maybe clean it off or something? Right now the range for locking and unlocking the car is about 10 feet, and the panic and trunk opener is literally 3 feet. Oh, and I also have the 98 XLS. As far as the battery goes, I just had mine changed at the dealer a couple months ago, it worked right away no problems other than the horrible range.

The control box for a '95 XLS is located on a brace in the left rear trunk interior, looks like this, don't know if its the same for a '98 or not:

I don't think cleaning it will have any impact on reception - my owner's manual doesn't give a very big range for the remote to begin with, about what you stated. My trunk range is about the same as yours and the doors are at best 20 feet.
