How much does it cost to fix that obnoxious sound?

I have the 98 XLS and I am talking about the clunking noise in the front, how much does this cost to have fixed? I just can't tolerate the noise anymore, now its on the drivers front and passengers side, when it is cold it is noticeably louder.

your strut mounts are bad, should be about $50/side for the parts, labor depends

I don't think it is dangerous, thought I am not 100% sure. What has happened is that the rubber bushing in the mount has worm away and is allowing the mount to move around. For me, it was worth it to have it replaced its not a huge job u just need to remove each strut, take it apart and replace the mount. you need a spring compressor to do this, so its not a DIY job. I doubt a regular mechanic would charge you more than $100 for labor, but find out.

id have to agree its not 100% safe, but its not dangerous either. you arent getting the best ride quality you can be, and there is a chance it is causing other problems. some auto part stores will lend you a spring compressor for free. and if its bugging you that much, id say do it. my drivers window didnt work for almost 9 months, and i never felt better once i got it fixed.

you could do it yourself, if you are mechanically inclined, and if you have air tools, lol. there are videos online that show you the steps and photos as well, but not all cars are the same so they might leave out or add in a few steps, they are more meant for guidelines than direct step by step instructions.

I did both front mounts in under 2 hrs on our 97. The mounts cost me ~$75 each at Autozone. You can probably source them cheaper on the internet. I had some Craftsman stick spring compressors, purchased when I upgraded my Miata's suspension.
I also replaced one of the front sway bar links while I was at it as I know these make a lot of clunking when they get worn.
