Hey guys, I was wondering if anybody did anything to their sound system?
One of my speakers is not working and I wanted to change my sound system for a while now. Is it hard to wire and stuff, and what speakers should I buy, do they have to be certain size? Any tips are appriciated.
I have a 98 XLS, got 2 12" MTX subs with an MTX amp, and Pioneer 3900 head unit. Stock speakers, sounds incredible. Plenty loud, and plenty of bass. If you want new speakers, look at Polk. Stock speakers actually aren't that bad, but I do have the XLS so it is the premium sound system. Does anyone know what brand the speakers are, just curious?

Nice, I have a pioneer deck also.
Yeah, the speakers are 4" 20 watt 4 ohm Harmon Kardon like speakers, with three mounting holes. A lot tell me that its 5.25", bought a pair of 5.25" eclipses to replace them, but I was owned. ALSO- if you have the premium audio option, theres a super secret hidden external amplifier behind the dash. /spoiler
As far as new wiring goes,(1996) I loved my car when it came to that. under the carpeting, right next to the door theres wire channels running from the front to the back of the car with room for extra cables. Ive done all my electical, sound, misc work myself, so if you need any help, ask!

i have the premium audio in my 98 xl, and i replaced my door speakers and it sounds amazing! pioneers and kenwood 4".
DO NOT GET 5.25"'S they do not directly bolt on.
the wiring is cake, you cant screw it up. if nothing else, just match the size of the plug to the size of the wire ends.
odds are your stock speakers are pretty blown/dried up. the difference in replacing them with new ones alone will make a significantly noticeable difference.
i'm leaving my stock sub alone, it still gives me enough bass as is.

Quick qestion, did the 4" have the three mounting holes or did you have to drill out new holes in the baffle for the standard four?

i aligned two of the holes with the stock ones, and used the third stock screw to hold the other corner in place. i didnt feel 4 was necessary and sealed the edges with a little bit of foam. whole install takes like 10 - 15 min per door from door panel on to back on again. i can do it in my sleep i have taken the panels off so many times now.
how many speakers do I need to replace if I decide to go with it? only one speaker in the front (driver's side door) is not working, so if I replace just the two in the front is that going to work?
Here is what I know:
Stock speakers in Non premium are Fujitsu Ten (Eclipse) and they suck (horrible mids or highs
You can get MB Quarts 4" on Ebay ($50 shipped) that are much better and will fit with minor modifications to the boxes in the doors.
I think premium models now have JBL. They also have an aux woofer in the back deck, but your not going to get a lot of output out of it.
I put a bazooka bass tube in the trunk, and for my taste it's plenty. If you want eveything to rattle, your going to need a pair of 12" and about 800 watts minimum. Had 2 12"s when I was younger, but I got tired of moving them out of the trunk. Bazooks bass tubes are compact sound great and don't cost that much considering you have a woofer, enclosure and amp all in one. Just make sure you fasten them down as they will roll around and pull the wires out. If you want good highs and mids, put a limiting cap on the tweeters as no matter how good a 4" you put in the doors it's not made for bass. I didn't bypass the built in amps as I didn't want to have to rewire everything.

If you want nice deep bass, install an aftermarket amp w/subs. However you have to run power/turn on/and grounding cables to the amp, so it becomes sort of invlolved. But don't worry if you have no exp. with audio. I knew nothing but did a ton of research and was able to wire up my first car nicely. Once you learn it, its pretty straightforward.
