you can get them from any major electronics store, best buy, circuit city, heck walmart sells a bunch of speakers. i got some 40 watt and 60 watt speakers, but i still have the stock head unit so it doesnt really matter.
prices are around 50 a pair, new give or take a little.
Get MB Quarts on Ebay for $50. I think they are made in Germany, but they sound real good, and I've had cheap ones (polk and pioneer) to compare to. You have to be realistic with a 4" speaker thou. It really is only good for highs and some mids. Add some aux. bass and you will be a lot more satisfied. I posted on this in another Avy post.

I've got 4" Infinitis 4012I all around. They are super crisp and clear. I had to make adapters for them to fit properly but they were definitely worth it.
I think I even got them on sale so it was easier on the wallet...

OK- I've seen a bunch of different opinions here. I've got a 97 that I want to do all 4 doors in. It had the 7(?) speaker setup- looks like the 4" and a tweeter in the fronts, and the full range in the back, and had the "subwoofer" in the rear deck. Everybody says 5-1/4" is no prob in the back, but a couple guys said they could get them in the front and others say no way. My wife needs the car alot on weekends so I don't get a lot of time to play with it, and I want to have my ducks in a row when I go to do the job. I already installed a Kenwood DPX302 receiver and replaced the "sub" with a pair of Advent 10" in a custom drop-down mount under the factory grille with a separate Power Acoustic 120 watt amp on the Advents. Not a whole lot of power (320 total), but I was going for great sound at a moderate level, and it will still rattle the car when you want it to. I also didn't have to get into rewiring other than new 10 ga back to the subs. BTW- the Kenwood is perfect for this car- double-DIN mount, built in adjustable high-pass filters on the front and rear, and low-pass on the sub out.
Be glad to post pics of the sub setup if anyone's interested- it's really easy to build. Also have the factory repair manual w/ all wiring diagrams.
you can fit 5 1/4" in the doors, but modification is required. you WILL HAVE TO CUT away at the stock baffles and you WILL have to seal around the speakers so they dont rattle and have bass response. 4" speakers are a direct fit all the way around and would be the simplest to do, and still sound great. the tweeters are wire in so i say leave them alone it doesn't hurt anything and it save you additional trouble. the back speakers are no different than the fronts. the only difference is the shape of the baffles that they are mounted in, which could be a problem in the front.
and it would be nice to see the enclosure you created with the 10"s as a sub replacement. BTW why did you replace? blown sub or just wanted more?
Thanks. Ill get the pics and details up as soon as I can- going OOT for work this week. I replaced it b/c it was not a real sub- it's just parallelled off of the left rear speaker. Just a bigger full range w/ only marginally better bass.
(No one makes an 8" dual voice coil sub for direct replacement either, and I got a deal on the Advents.)
Here is what I believe the best options are based on price:
Infinity, MB Quart or other high end components will sound the best, but if your going to spend the time and $ to put them in you might as well add a an amp or your wasting your money. If you go that far you might as well put in aux bass. Putting a free air woofer is a waste of time in my opinion. I'd get a small box with a woofer or a basstube. I have the basstube. It Sounds great and it's one unit, so I can take it out if needed. It is not super powerful, but helps the small speakers a lot. The amp speaker and enclosure cost $215. I don't think you can design a better performing enclosure than Bazooka (they are optomized using a computer)
You have to be realistic with 4" or 5 1/4" speakers. They are not for bass or even really good mids. I wish they would have put 6X9" in the back deck. I had a set in my corrolla on an amp and they were about all I could handle for loudness (again not a lot of bass, but better than most component speakers).
The stock speakers are a good brand Fujitsu Ten (eclipse), but like most factory speakers they have little output and aren't built for longevity (foam surrounds).
Any speakers you buy will probably require moderate modification. Most 4" speakers which fit well have mounting locations every 90 deg, but the factory speakers have them every 120 deg if I recall correctly.

you are correct, the stock speakers only have 3 star screws every 120* but reusing 3 screws holds the speaker just fine
Supra06 - I picked up the Infiniti 4012I for $50 a pair at the local Futureshop. I was waiting for them to go on sale and they did for half price.
I didn't want to go with larger speakers because there is a plastic speaker enclosure inside the door that you mount the speaker to that needed to be altered. ALso, if you stick larger speakers into a box designed for smaller speakers, you'll lose some sound quality. The 4" Infinitis have very little mid-bass as it is.
My '96 came with tweeters in the front door handle bezels but no subwoofer. I added in 1 Phoenix Gold Ti10 in a ported box. It pounds hard as hell.
