Trunk releae button does not work anymore

1997 Toyota Avalon XLS

A while back I notice my car was always running out of battery due to light being left on. I turn off all interior dome lights but still didn't fix the problem. Then I found out my trunk is being release by itself everytime I put it into gear. I then unplug the harness in the trunk for the trunk release. Now I have to manually open trunk with key; its was fine at first but now its getting annoying and I would like to know what is causing my trunk to release on its own so I can fix it. Thank you.

EDIT: My computer is acting up. Before it would not post now it post up two messages. My mistake, please disregard and delete this thread admin.

Sounds as if you have a crossed wire. Guessing the truck used to pop open when you put the trans into Reverse on your way to Drive. When the shifter is placed in Reverse the backup lights go on. Check to see if your backup lights work when everything is connected.

Guessing the backup light wiring is crossing with the truck open electric solenoid. A place to look for frayed wires is where the wiring to the truck jumps from the truck body to the truck lid at the hinge area.

This senario would explain all you strange behavior.

Suggest with engine off, you place an amp meter between one battery terminal and the battery cable. Then reconnect the wires, you may find you have a current draw due to crossed wires.

One good thing in not having an electric truck unlock is someone breaking into your car will need to work a little harder to get into the trunk.
