Gen1 95 Avy - adding replacement remote

Hi all,
I'd thought I'd document my experiences with programming a new remote for my 95 Avalon which I recently purchased. The car came without any remotes for the keyless entry system.

Car: 1995 Avalon XLS with the factory keyless entry system.

I purchased a used factory remote off of E-bay. I first checked the owner's manual to see what the FCC ID was for the remote, and that it matched the picture in the manual since I had no info at all as to what remote was supposed to go with the vehicle. The ID for it was:
FCC ID: GQ43VT7T
TRW ISC: 1470 K1361
The factory remote looks like this:

The remote came with programming instructions. The method described on other threads here on TN to progam a new remote (open driver's door, insert key, pull key out, lock doors five times, etc) for a '98 Avy did not work. Must be a different type of system. I followed the instructions that came with my remote, but with a slight variation because the instructions described the wrong control box color.

The bulb failure warning module will need to be disconnected and two pin sockets in the connector jumpered together briefly in order to add a new remote to the system. The bulb failure warning module is located in the left side of the trunk, on the inside of a support brace near the left trunk lid hinge. You will need to pull aside the preformed trunk liner, seen here in place:

To do this, turn the plastic trim screw fasteners one turn and using a thin pair of needle nose pliers, remove the whole fastener by levering it up or going underneath it and pulling it up. Note: there are several of these fasterners you will need to remove. You will also need to remove the single push-in type trim fastener near the hinge - I used a long thin set of needle nose pliers to go underneath it and pull it gently up. Don't use a screwdriver - these type of Toyota fasteners are notorious for breaking off on one side if you try to pry it up that way.

The bulb failure warning module was a dark brown plastic colored box on my car, held in the brace with a simple push-in plastic connector molded into it. It fits into the oblong hole you see in the brace here:

It is not the module below- this is the actual door unlock receiver. It is gray, and held to the brace with a metal bracket and two 10mm nuts. My instructions said to jumper the pins on the "gray lamp failure box", but mine was dark brown as shown above. The lamp failure warning module was below the gray box on the brace.

The lamp failure warning box is clearly marked as such, but when in place on the brace the markings face away from you and can't be seen:

It also has the pins numbered inside the white plastic connector in the control box (can't be seen in this pic). Match these to the white connector/wire bundle in the car - you will need to jumper pins 11 and 12 together.

On the connector, use a bent paperclip or small piece of wire to jumper the connector sockets for pins 11 and 12. If you are holding the connector with the release push clip on top, then pins 11 and 12 will be in the lower right corner like this:

If jumpered correctly, you will hear the locks and trunk release cycle once.

Next, with the jumper still in place, push any button on the remote. The locks should now cycle. Your remote has been programmed.

Remove the jumper and reconnect the bulb failure warning module and test the remote. It should now work.

You can add another remote using the same method, for a total of two remotes per vehicle.

Might be a good idea to clean the remote if its a used one - mine was pretty gunky inside with a lot of lint built up around the buttons and some sticky liquid residue between one of the buttons and the circuit board inside. Here it is apart after being mostly cleaned up - it is a simple interference fit that you can pry apart with a jeweler's screwdriver. I cleaned mine with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol, and then wiped the outside with 303 Aerospace Protectant. Note: the batteries are CR2016 if you need to replace them. You should not have to reprogram the remote after replacing the batteries.

Hope this helps, enjoy your new remote!

What a great post. Pictures and everything. My problem is the bulb failure warning module on my 1998 Avalon XL does not have a wire in socket 11 or 12 I do not remember now which one. I have tried the key in key out method mentioned in other posts and that did not work either. When I took the carpeting back I could find the Lamp failure warning module but no receiver door control. Anyone have any idea where that is? The door locks work fine but car came with no remote.

Yes yours most likely is not factory installed which takes a completely deferent remote and programing. The other option is it does not have keyless entry at all. Get your VIN and call your local Toyota dealer he will be able to tell you from there.

Update to this thread:

I bought a second remote exactly like the first one so that I could have another remote for my spare set of keys. I followed the steps again to add my second remote, as the instructions I received when I bought it said that you could program two remotes this way.

Well, the new second remote was added just fine. Problem is, now the original remote added by this method will not work. Switched them back and forth several times via this programming method - only one remote will work at any given time.

So, while you can add a remote using the method above, you can only add ONE, NOT TWO. I'm sure there is a way to add a second remote, but I sure can't find any way to do it. I'll still hang onto this remote as a backup or in case somehow I stumble on instructions to add another remote in the future. If somebody out there has different instructions for adding remotes to a '95, I'd sure like to read it to see what it says. Anybody know what the dealership uses or what the factory manual says? Anyone with a factory manual willing to look it up for me?

EDIT:
Well paint me green and call me Gumby. In my search for a thread about factory manuals, I came across this thread on how to program a remote for a '95. Even has a TSB page as a graphic, which I posted below. Guess I'll go try again, I must be doing something wrong in my programming.

Keyless remote issue

Thanks for the input. I have been trying to get one remote to work with my 95 Avalon XLS. I was able to get a factory remote that matched the code on mine. Using the same install guide as you and I can't get it to program. The locks cycle when I jump the 11 and 12 slots. But the remote won't do anything, I have cleaned it, put new batteries in it and tried it 50 times with no luck. Anyone have an idea why or how I can get it to work?

Gen1

Are you sure that the remote you bought is a good used working one? If you can't get it working, I'll sell you my second one cheap, LOL.

How cheap is cheap? All jokes aside I may be interested if I can't get this one working. I bought it from a store on the INTERNET that specializes in car remotes. It is guaranteed, but I have not been able to get it to work. I am waiting to hear back from them. I would just like to know how to get one to work. This one looks new and is in excellent shape. When I jump the leads the locks cycle and the trunk lock cycles just like it should but when I push the button the remote won't program.

Do you have your key in or out of the switch, and is the driver door opened or closed? I am looking for any little thing that I may not be doing correctly.

second remote pic

I had the key out of the switch, and all the doors closed (trunk open of course).

Honestly, if I can't get this one to work along with the other one at the same time, then it really is superfluous and I'd be willing to sell it along. I just paid $12.75 for it on E-bay including the shipping, and I would sell it to you for that. In looking at it, it doesn't exactly match my first remote, the trunk release button is bigger and the lock/unlock buttons are just a hair bigger, and it does look more like the illustration in the Avy owner's manual. However the FCC ID's, etc. are the same, and it does in fact work on my car. Pic of the actual remote from the e-bay auction below. My original remote (in the big pic) cost me $35 including the shipping.

Ok email me your address and I will send you a money order for it. My email is thechaplin@gmail.com. Or send me your phone # and I will call and make arrangements. I don't want either of us to put that kind of info on the forum. That's for your input.

Since I just got it today, I'm going to clean it up, freshen the batteries, and try to get it to register again. If it still doesn't work after all that, I'll send you a PM with my address.

Cheers,
Steve

Finally got around to doing this task this weekend, and was able to add the second remote. The instructions say "push any button" on the remote. I pushed the unlock for the first remote, and then lock for the second remote. Problem is, if you have a door open (like I did), the door lock function won't work on the remote (confirmed by the owner's manual). I believe this cancels out adding a remote if you are pushing the lock button to add a remote and you have a door open.

I repeated the add-a-remote steps, but pushed the trunk unlock button this time on both remotes to add them. This worked perfectly, and now both remotes are added. You can cycle the trunk lock with the trunk lid open and also regardless of if a door is open or not, so I would recommend using that button to add a new remote to the system.

Smile It works!

I just got my Avalon last week with no keyless remotes. I purchased a nice used one on Ebay for $20. It took me less than 3 minutes to program using these instructions. Awesome!
