Since I had to remove my center console to fix the cupholder on my 95 XLS, I thought I'd document it just in case anyone does a search for it in the future.
1. Remove the shifter cover. It is a simple interference fit with four metal clips - use something thin to wedge underneath it on the side - I prefer wide metal paint scrapers for this as they don't dig into the plastic and you have a wide surface to pry with - less danger of breaking the trim piece if its stubborn.
2. Rotate it and move up and off over the shift lever.
3. There are two phillips screws by the shifter - remove both.
4. There are two 12mm bolts inside the armrest/stowage box that must be undone, then you can simply lift the console away.
5. The cupholder is held in with four screws, and looks like this when removed:
In case you ever wondered what was under the console, there is the parking brake cable adjuster, and the airbag sensor.
