Hey thanks for all the pics and tips, I want to tackle this soon on my 95 as well. How long did it take to do the rear bank? Rick

your engine is much cleaner than mine inside, what type of oil do you use, mine already had a slight coating of sludge, with only 90k miles, mine is now at 128k. Plus I change it every 3k niles, how often do you change yours?

I just bought this car at auction totalled, have yet to put 1000 miles on it. it has a computer generated jiffy lube sticker in the window so the previous owner probably kept it regularly changed. However, I use mobil1 synthetic when I get to changing it myself.

before / after

Parimento - if you have a V6 that is prone to sludge, you can address it well with Auto-Rx.com and then going to synthetic oil. Worked very well with my '02. I think it's the same engine as yours. Fequent oil changes (or more frequent than your current interval) may not be the answer. If you can get that stuff out, the synthetic will constantly clean and hopefully prevent the sludge from continuing to build. May not have been your OCI that caused the issue, just a design flaw that no corporation admits to.
Lots of posts on bobistheoilguy.com if you're interested. Good luck.

Nice. After looking at the pictures, the 3 hours the dealer quoted (for the rear) does not sound so bad after all.

I was quoted 3 hours for the back one at I think it was $80 or $90 per hr. I will do the front one and maybe let them do the back one.

Which one did you have done? The front one looks easy. The rear looks like a bear.

Yep, the front ones shouldn't take more than 15 mins. My friend and I did the rear ones, took about 2 hours MAX. If you remove the egr then it won't be so bad....haha, I got a long scratch on my wrist for trying to wiggle my hand in there to pull off the wires.
good luck

Agreement on oil for 1MZ FE

I just wanted to throw my $.02 in here. First off, thanks for the excellent slide show on what is a tough, but doable repair. Wish I had this a few years ago.

Regarding sludge, buy yourself synthetic oil. I have 2 1 MZ FE's presently, one on running Mobil 1 and the other on Wal Mart's synthetic. They are both doing wonderfully and the Wal Mart one is just past 188k miles. You keep them clean and they will last you forever. You use cheap oil and you will pay dearly. And spring for a decent filter as well.

Whan you have the intake apart you, take the time to clean it thoroughly. And do the same to the lower half using a spray or a cleaning brush and something like seafoam. Your intake valves will thank you.

This is also a great time to fush your EGR asssembly. You can open adn close it with a vacuum pump and flush it with a spray cleaner.

Thanks for you efforts on the slideshow.

Mike
