Average repair costs for Avalon 1st ten years.

I own a 2004 Avalon XLS with 36,200 miles on it. Recently I was contacted by an insurance group with an offer of comprehensive bumper to bumper coverage on engine, electronics, drive train, transmission, air conditioning system ... all parts and labor for everything excluding maintainance, fluids and brake pads ... for 5 years or 100,000 miles. The policy comes with a zero deductible. Other sweeteners include hotel costs for 2 nights if stranded, loaner cars, towing over 100 miles ...

Sounds like a great policy, right? With tax the cost of the policy is under $2,500.

So the question begs, what is the average and projected average repair costs for the 2004 Avalon going into the first ten years? Also, were there any common repair problems with this model year?

That's a complete waste of money IMO. My 1996 has been trouble free for 10 years with the exception of rack and pinion gear and P/S pump, CV joints and normal replacement items (pads rotors batteries water pump and timing belts), I have had nothing go wrong. But then I DIY everything except timing belts and the embedded water pump.

Do a search of the archives for 2004 problems and see what comes back.....

I purchased my 2005 avalon a few months ago from a lexus dealer. I also purchased a bumper to bumber extended warantee for $2,000. The best thing about it was if I do not use the warantee, I get a full refund when the warantee is up. That is a deal.

That's just another cleverly disguised marketing ploy to separate your money from your wallet! They know the odds are great that you will use the warranty for something at some point. You'll forever be torn regards gambling on whether or not to use it for a minimalist repair or try and hold out for a possible but unlikely catastrophic repair.

They've got you over a barrell.

Oh, trouble free? Since I've had my 98 for 2 years we have already spent like 5 grand on repairs.

If you are very handy I dont think you need an extended warranty although I can safely tell u I have spent at least 4k to keep the car going, most of it after 100k miles. New PS pump, rack, and steering knuckle, alternator, starter, transmission, all control arms, engine mounts (which were totally shot to shit). I think thats about it. Most recently I started doing most of the work myself to try and save a few bucks.

haha sure can...PS rack was at about 60k miles, steering knuckle 98k PS pump at 115K, transmission 115,900, alternator 112k, starter 128k, control arms 93k, engine mounts 128k (but prob should have been replaced sooner). I also had to replace the knock sensors at 70k and both strut mounts at ~40k.

Wow, I'm at 180K on my 1996 and have only replaced the Rack & Pinion Gear and the P/S pump. My strut mounts are way over due however.....esp the rear.

What led you to replace the knock sensors? Throwing codes? Do you only use Premium Fuel?

tks!

Obviously I don't know the facts, but I'd have to blame the PO(s).
That's not the norm for a well cared for Avy unless the miles are very high.

I don't know, really. The car was checked by a very good mechanic when we bought it and it is in very good shape inside and out, but recently its been getting worse. I am at about 105,000. I'll just be happy when I get rid of it.

Yea, the knock sensors were throwing codes, and no I always use reg unleaded, don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I've seen on this forum that the knock sensors are a common repair on the 1mz. My shocks front and rear are in perfect shape, even with daily driving in NYC and the five boros. I guess they get plenty of exercise to keep them in shape
