smell comes in from outside-- is vent problem?

Hi,

Outside smell from such as passing tar truck or "smoker" old car comes inside the cabin even though vent switch is in 'circulation' mode. It seems like vent damper is not closed completely by electrical motor.

It is 96 XL Avalon.
Has anyone attempt to fix? Where is motor and damper unit located? Any picture or figure would be appreciated.

Thanks

its all located behiend the glovebox. but i have never been in a car that is 'airtight' like it seems that you are looking for. especially at highway speeds, the air pressure difference is one of the reasons that outside air still gets in. and part of it can be that its a 12 year old car, but i think its more or less not going to change too much. best of luck with it.
