Avalon Rotors

Hello all,
When braking, my car shakes noticably. It also seems to surge forward at lower speeds. i.e. it's like the brakes grab and release. To me this shouts warped rotor but I would like your opinion on it. Also, I am considering chainging the rotors myself. Does anyone know if they are "pressed on?" i.e. would I need a hydraulic press to remove them from the hub? or would I simply remove the brake caliper?

Simply remove brake caliper.
Yes your description is pointing to rotor, which may also have uneven wear spots too.
look for any 3rd or 4th, 5th generation camry service manual (search) and the components look the same as the V6 caliper, guides, and anti rattle keepers.

agreed, sounds to me like your rotor has met its useful life. i dont know the quality, but i have seen drilled rotors on ebay for our avys, (and all models that share our drivetrain).
the rotors are not pressed on, just grab some breaker bars or some air tools and you should be done in a short while.

*dont forget to also change your pads while you are in there.

Rotor Install

Hi guys,
Thanks for replying. I have changed brake pads numerous times but I have never changed a set of rotors. When I remove the caliper, do I brute force the rotor off? (Is that why I would need a breaker bar or a air tool?) What about putting the new ones on?, Do they just slip on?

Thanks again.

There is the caliper bracket (torque plate) which will need to be taken off, but that is just 2 bolts per side.

Yea, after you get all the other stuff out of the way, get a rubber mallet and have at the rotor. New one slips on.

Don't get those ebay cheapies, I know people who have cracked them.

Napa blanks or any parts store blanks are great and cheap.

Before you buy new rotors, see if yours are still thick enough to have them re-turned. Usually cost about $15 - $20 each. Call around to your local auto parts stores to make sure they offer that service; some don't. The ones that do will inspect them for thickness and let you know beforehand if they can be salvaged.
