Gen 1 Avalons

I've been reading about both the gen 1 and gen2 Avalons. It seems to me the gen 1 is the better of the generations. I very seldom see problems with o2 sensors. Rack troubles 97 & 98 models. I've seen very few problems in the 96 year model.
Can anyone give me more feedback. I'm looking to upgrade from my Camry to the Avalon, preferable the 96 model.
Thanks for your input.

idk if you are clear on this, but 1997 and 1998 was the model year change, in 98' models the refreshed the font and rear fascias but that was essentially it, i mean besides the OBD2. and 1995-1999 are ALL gen 1's, they didnt redesign the whole car or its components or anything, thats why we all are grouped in this one forumn, the only huge difference is the front bumper/turn signals/grille, and tail lights.

Year to year changes. It only lists mechanical/equipment changes, and not the 1998 facelift.

1996 Toyota Avalon: Virtually unchanged in its second season, the Avalon continued its assault on the American family-sedan market.
1997 Toyota Avalon: Engine output got a boost to 200 horsepower in '97, and Avalons displayed a few minor appearance changes. An in-glass rear-window antenna replaced the power mast-type aerial, and heated outside mirrors became standard in the XLS sedan.
1998 Toyota Avalon: Front-seat-mounted side airbags were made standard for '98. The Avalon's frame was also revised to increase crash safety.
1999 Toyota Avalon: Toyota's flagship got standard daytime running lights and heated exterior mirrors for '99. An all-new model would arrive in 2000.

Isn't 1997, the year the horsepower went from 192 to 200, the same year they started having trouble with engine sludge? Sounds like they pushed a great engine just a little too far for 8 more hp. I'm glad I have a '95.

Lets not forget we are talking about a 10-12 year old car. We should expect things to need worked on even if this is toyotas premium model. I had $4000 to spend on my daughters first car and came across my 96xl with 125k. I'm not worried at all about the motor but everything else could eventually start getting expensive. I'm going to give this car one year and see how much it cost me then make a decision as whether to keep it or buy something newer. Just don't want anymore car payments.

I've kept my Avalon ('97 XL) pretty good condition, had to replace the front axle, and rick & pinion a while back, slight squeekyness on the brakes, but that is fixed now as well.

Other than that, she's 155,000, and still going strong. Good luck with her!
