96 with engine noise

I'm looking at a 96 xls with 82.5k, The problem is it has a ticking sound(not valves) coming from the engine. It starts a about 2k and stops around 3k. It also has a valve ticking. I'm thinking wrist pin. Any other suggestions? Other than this the car is in very good condition.
thanks

I would not risk buying that car.....unless you can DIY a replacement engine on the cheap.....
To answer your question about the wrist pin - The ticking that occurs between two and three thou - can you hear it under full load, partial load, or no load? ie, I need to know the exact condition under which you hear the ticking.

The ticking occurs under a load. The car drives just fine otherwise.

I would pass on that car. However, if you are hellbent on buying it, then immediately install synthetic oil. This will possibly, but most likely, extend the life of the engine as much as can be expected....

Thanks for your input, if I could buy it cheap cheap, I would. Then I would rebuild the engine. But not for 3K
