1998 avalon with a 3.0 liter v-6. With a 150# driver and about 100 lbs. of camping gear.... 1)What do you think I should be getting for freeway mileage?
2)For city traffic mileage?
3)What is best way to figure mileage? I have 18.5 gallon tank. Could fill the sucker up, write down mileage, and drive it in both conditons till it stops, rather not do that.
I have the 98 XLS with 100lb subs in the trunk. This car gets shitty gas mileage considering the engine size, in my opinion. I get about 17-18 mpg city, however highway you should get about 25.
we all have the 'same' car with the same specs. but you will get ~18 city and ~25-29 highway. NEVER WAIT UNTIL YOU NEED 18 GALLONS just dont. wait till the gas light is on, and then get gas. now keep in mind you might get better gas mileage on 91 vs. 87, but not in many cases. and use the built in trip odometer, fill up. zero out. drive for about 350 miles (varying on city and highway combo) and then refill. divide miles driven by gas used. and bobs your uncle.
I track mileage and gas grades at every fill-ip religiously with my Palm. I average 23 mpg in mixed driving. I use almost exclusively Arco Supreme in the car, unless I'm about out and there is no Arco around.
Over using various types of gas I found that I average 10% better mileage with 91 octane than using 87 octane. 91 usually costs 5-7% more than 87, so its a net increase of 3% using 91 really (plus the other anti-knock benefits, etc.) Every other tankful I toss in a bottle of STP standard gas treatment. I usually buy the bottles enmass whenever they go on sale.

Either you have a lead foot, or there is some maintenance to be done on your car.
Even with my supercharger, city driving gave me 21 mpg, while on the highway, i have hit 30 mpg. It's not hard to do.
I will admit, I have seen as low as 13 mpg when I was on it all the time.
I don't drive like a granny, but as far as maintenance I get oil changes when I'm supposed to, keep all the fluids topped off, keep tires pumped, just get bad gas mileage.
I just got back from a short road trip, and averaged 28.5 mpg with cruise set at 75mph, and running 87 octane. The tank before that was a mix of city and highway and averaged 26 mpg. I am more then happy with the fuel economy of the Avalon.

that shouldnt hurt, i would be hesitant on the flush, i would do drain and refills, i know guys that do this at each oil change, its easy and you are removing most of the old fluid, without the chance of messing up any seals.

I get about 26/28.5 like sseaman and happy with it too.
But it wasn't that good until I raised the air in the tires to 38 lbs and used Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner. I noticed a difference in power and gas mileage the first time I used the Techron.
wow, with my new rims and tires, (03 rsx with uniroyals) and proper inflation, i got 27.7 highway = ~250 on half a tank, and i'm doin another 200 miles today so i'll see how it goes. but all i did was properly inflate my tires. i'm still going to drain and fill my tranny fluids, make sure its fresh and topped off.
On a recent road trip with 4 adults and the trunk packed we got about 24MPG going a steady 80MPH on 87 octane, but that went up to 29.5 switching to 91+.
Driving the car by myself I usually get 24-26 combined (I drive...spirited), but my mom gets 30-31 with a mix of 50/50 city/highway driving, but she gives granny driving a whole new meaning.
In my early years (this was my first car, technically speaking) I got about 22 combined on premium. Mind you I was redlining the thing at every opportunity, but she took it like a champ.

so 220mi and still a little way to go on less than half a tank. i'll see when i fill up what my mileage is but its gone up so much with just my new tires and air in them. i used to get a measly 17/18 on my 98 with 92,500 mi. city driving.....spirited also, but we will see about that. i can see so much the true value in buying a good tire. my old tires were the cheapest things available but i got brand name tires , not even performance, and the grip beyond amazing compared to my old tires and the improved safety and gas mileage.
