Thumbs up Sub on the rear deck?

I've seen a few avalons with a sub on the rear deck on the brake light mount thing. I don't have one, but i looked under my rear deck in my trunk and i have like a circle that looks like it can pop out where the sub would of been. my question now is, how hard is it to acutally put a sub in there? an aftermarket one. what size would fit in there? is it possiblee? can the factory amp in the car handle a single (small-ish) sub? please reply. thankss.

Hello all. I am new to the forum. Just bought a 97 Avy 136K bout a month ago. I was also wondering if I can install the stock sub from either Toyota or Lexus to the rear deck. Wondering was it hard or easy to install. Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

As long as you know how to wire up a stereo it seems pretty straight forward. Removing the plate is a little bit of a beyotch though.

Factory amp is garbage, have the stock sub in my 98 XLS. It sucked. I got 2 MTX 12" in the trunk, plenty of boom. And no it isn't easy to install, professionals at Circuit City did mine. Get an after market head unit too.

I don't know what your goal is for your sound system but you've got a couple of options to consider. The best would be to put a sub in the trunk with an aftermarket amp pushing it, but I'll answer your original question.

From what I've read, the factory sub is 8" and runs about 26W @ 3.7 ohms. The opening you see in the rear deck is 6.5". The easiest fix would be to purchase the factory sub and high mounted brake light for the 7 speaker setup. You'll need to find a way to run the wires from the factory headunit and amp to the sub.

For an aftermarket sub, you'll either need the high mounted brake light setup or you'll have to construct one. An aftermarket 8" won't magically fit in the 6.5" hole. Also the factory amp won't have enough power to make the sub perform to it's capabilities.

Sounds like an aftermarket sub in the trunk is the wise choice. Thanks for the feedback.

yeah, you really have to go aftermarket. the stock sub is only made by toyota and is very expensieve and hard to find, not to mention you probablly dont have the amp in the car to power it. aftermarket isnt bad thing, you have a lot of options and can go all out or you can be conservative. i would suggest a box in the trunk since free air speakers are hard to find and that is what you need if you wanted to use the stock location.

The trunk is pretty much the enclosure. A really, large enclosure. Any speaker can be "free air" As long as you don't over drive it, in my honest opinion.

Oh, and it also depends on your ability, but you could either make a little 6" opening wood baffle to put over the hole, and mount a 6" midbass speaker. Or you could build up a little box on the deck to fit a 8" speaker and have the magnet hang though the hole. Then carpet it and it will be good as new. :P
