I finally got my new intake for the avalon and i couldn't wait to install it. I got it off ebay, and it was listed under 99-02 solara v6 intake. fits like a glove. The install was straight forward, remove the hoses from the breather by the engine cover, and below the brake booster. and then remove old intake, just some phillips screw clamps, and there are three 10mm bolts holding the bottom of the airbox in. there are two more 10mm bolts that hold the MAF in place.
(car wont start with no intake or air flow over the maf )
I have a ton of pics for your enjoyment, and i got the intake off ebay for 30.99 shipped, and it came with two hoses, hose clamps, bracket, and filter.
and if there are any other pics you want me to shoot, lemme know.
and BTW it sounds awesome, very throaty almost like a v8, and i dont notice a difference yet, but i will keep you posted, i just did one quick run because it was still very wet on the roads.
lol, funny you ask, i thought you were going to have that question when i was scrolling down through my pics to see your reply.
for everyone
There is a wood block above my battery because i was in tampa for the weekend and parked my car and when i got back to it, my battery had a hard time unlocking the doors. I got a new battery with the right cranking amps and cold cranking amps, etc. and put it in. well when i went to put the battery clamp back on, the battery was too short!, so i had a piece of square metal tubing, but that was only for the ride home (cause it conducts electricity, it was a dumb idea, being near a battery and all). so i cut a small piece of wood to hold it all in place. i keep meaning to paint it so i get less questions, but it gives my car character.
And i went for a 'spirited' drive today and the car is a beast and i feel more torque on the higher end.
does anyone have any ideas on an easy way to make a heat shield? plastic seems obvious but i dont want it melting, and i dont want it looking like junk.
defineatly, i just filled up my tank yesterday and will drive as normal as i can help, and let ya know how much it helps. i also fabbed up an aluminum heat shield last night, and i need some weatherstripping to finish it up and will post up pictures of that to. I did notice the other day that the aluminum intake got pretty hot from the heat in the engine, so i am looking into more insulation as well.
I bought the intake for my '95 Avalon, unfortunatly it does not fit. I should have checked it out a little closer but the '95 has a different MAF sensor. It was the only year for gen 1 that was different.
if is like a small section of intake, you should be able to use any type of tubing to extend it. in past vehicles i have used exhaust tubing and cut appropriate holes for sensors.
i had no intentions of misleading you, again sorry and good luck
Anyway, how can you go wrong for $35 bucks. I have a '98 Lexus ES300 that it will fit on. Why do they make it so hard to get an intake for the Avalon anyway? The MAF remanufactured runs for $275. Ouch! I wouldn't want to mess with it.

wow, i had no idea that the MAF was that expensive! i should have been more careful with it. I am really glad that it still worked out for you. I couldnt pass up the intake for less than a K&N. and so far i am getting better gas mileage, i have been pounding on the engine since i put it on, and got about 100 highway miles on it and am getting around 18mpg which is great considering how much i have had the engine revving high up there. i can feel more power and it still sounds fantastic.
looks great! I have the same intake on my Avalon as well Just wondering how did you get all three hoses connected to the intake, I saw the one from the crankcase and the one from the charcoal canister connected, but what about the small one that was connected to the bottom of the airbox? I don't know what it does but its there. I just used a T connector and joined that small hose and the hose from the charcoal canister together, then to the intake. is this even necessary to do?
there are only 3 connections to my intake, the crank, the MAF an the hose from the bottom of the airbox. not sure what that hose does, but there was a spot to connect it, so i did.
I just took the stock connections and transferred them.
never had a third connection to my intake.
My 98' was made in 10/97, maybe that has something to do with it?
