I just sold my 91 LC, and I'm currently looking at a 95 Avalon with 235k miles, but the timing belt has just been serviced, and a 98 with 130k miles, but unknown maint history, and some small dents in the rear panel. I have gone through page after page of post here, just want to be on top of things.
Any leaks under the car after it has been running (radiator, oil, etc.) Listen and feel for tranny slips. The average life (not sure if on the avy's too) for a tranny is about 200k miles. If you can, get a carfax on it to see if there is any major body damage that is hidden. Also, check to make sure heat/air/windows work. Listen for steering "growl" when you turn, could be a hint steering rack needs replaced. Also, if you get a chance, check steering fluid to see if it is low. Keep in mind, seller could know of this problem and just added fluid for a really short drive, so try and really get the feel of the car. Also, when braking, try to see if there is any vibrations from rotors going bad. Not a serious expense, but good to know ahead of time.
I had a 95 and it seems the body was semi-weak and could show dents easy.
Don't be rushed into buying it, or you will easily skip over these.

My car has less body roll than I do.
When you want sports car handling, you buy a sports car.
We have one with 185000 miles and here is what I've had. Look for leaks under the car where it has been sitting. Replaced steering rack and power steering pump for leaks. Valve cover leaks. Starter replaced a while back. No timer belt issues, been replacing them about every 50,000 miles though. The brakes seem to be an issue with mine, the rear make a growling noise backing up. Only lasts the first couple of applications, then normal. Front vibrates applying brakes. Replaced rotors and now doing it again. Will probably get them turned. But runs good and gas mileage is decent.
One last thing, the ignition switch occassionally acts up and can't get the steering wheel unlocked. And just happened today, can't get it out of park after engine start.
I drove one last night seems like a pretty good car. Only things i found on the first visit was a small dent in the rear passenger door and some scratches, and felt like it needed an alignment. The brakes were smooth, didnt notice any growl while turning the wheels. Didnt notice any drips on the ground. The leather seats were great other then some wear on the drivers seat ( but it's a 98 there is going to be wear somewhere)
I'm going back to drive again, and see what I can get it for.

id say go with the 98' with over 100k less on it, and if its in comparable condition, you cant go wrong. even with miles of punishment, most of these cars hold up great.
