I'm not sure with the avalon, but i know on Land Cruisers there are some John Deere bulbs that are higher wattage and still fit the housing

I found this online for $20/set, what do you think of this? Anyone please tell me what is the wattages and Kevin (K) scales on the standard 97 Avalon headlight? This set is for 97 Camry, will it fit 97 Avalon?

Check out this website, and do some searching on 9011, and 9012 bulbs, they truely provide more light then xenon lights

HID will do the trick. I use 4300k so the light comes out white. my 97' alvalon uses bulb size 9006 for low beam. You can get a set for $70 shipped on ebay. Go for hid lights if you really want bright lights, dont waste your $ on after market bulbs.

please don't use hids in the stock halogen housings, they're illegal and will blind everyone else on the road.

if you want to do it right, get a retrofit kit on ebay that come with oem hid projectors, the LS430 projectors produce one of the widest areas of light available.

On a budget?
TOSHIBA HIR 9011 (high) and 9012 (low).

9012's: John Deere Part number for low beams is:
AH211917. This is the same Toshiba HIR bulb!! Range in price from $10-$13 EACH. They are found on 9000 series tractor.

9011's: You can get the high beams at GM dealers or gmpartsdirect.com($21.55 each as of today 8/2/08). It is the high beam used on 2002-up avalanches. Part number 15094219.

I been using Silverstars 9005 (hi beems) in my 97 and waiting for them to burn out then will go with the 9011's next

Head Light Bulbs

I too have been looking to find a solution to my 97 Avalon headlights being dim to the point of being useless especially on a rainy night on low beam. The dealer provides a service to polish the lense which do seem to be very cloudy. I would check out the lense also. I am thinking some very good jewelers rouge or quality paste wax might also clean up the lense without leaving scratches which would scatter the light.

there are plastic cleaners that will take care of that problem. take 10 minutes and will cost you about $4. Then try the 9011 and 9012 bulbs.

Wait high beams and low beams are different bulbs? I alway thought the low beams were just pointed up more and given some more power when you flick on high beams. I'm not too good with cars....

O yes, they are different.
I went to my local GM dealer and he wants $41 for their 9011 - so need to buy online.
Same for JohnDeere, he wants $43 ea. for the 9012 Again, need to get these online.
Neither had in stock anyway.
You will have to modify these bulbs a bit - easy to do (trim one of the locking tab)

Update: JohnDeere is $24.99 now as well. I ended up ordering online on ebay.
The lows (9012) are a little brighter that stocks. Not sp sure its worth $58 with shipping...
But the silverstars I have in for hi-beams, they made a nice difference.
Am installing driving lights to boost the lights - and putting in 160w bulbs ea (H3) in them.
Am going to put the 9011's on order in my wifes 04 impala as her hi-beam silverstars is not so impressive. Must be the lens design as my 98 ford coutour made a big difference with silverstars...

One of my few complaints about my 96 Avy. You cannot even tell that the low beams are on at night when it is raining.

I ordered the John Deere, and am in agreement with ELAD - dissapointed that there was little if any improvement.

I too noticed that the lense are very cloudy. But a search on the internet shows a lot of expensive, 20-step processes to clean them. SSEAMAN - can you share more details of your cheap/quick method? Thanks.
