Traction Control Malfunction?

Ok, heres the scenario

98 Avalon 92k, new intake, 02 RSX wheels and tires (205 60 R16) nothing crazy different with them, but the tires (uniroyal tiger paw) grip much better (but i had realllly cheap tires on before). anyway, when leaving parking lots and accelerating fast and traction control on (but not engaged) it activates, slows acceleration so the car gains traction, the car kind of bucks back and fourth for a second or two and traction control engages again and then de-activates. as in no longer will engage and the "traction off" light stays on, and will not turn off if the traction control button is pressed a hundred times or held, or if the car is turned off. it has happened 3 times and the only way i have gotten it to reset is to clear trouble codes with a code scanner, but that means a lot of trips to an auto parts store.

i feel like traction control should stay on, specifically during these conditions, and not disengage.

was there a recall or something on this? its not like i am pushing a ton of power, maybe 15 more than stock tops.

thanks for the input.

do u possibly have a check engine code or anything? it sounds like what happened to me on my 97, i went to pull out of a street and it was kind of rocky and the front wheels lost traction and traction engaged, then the car like jumped and traction stayed off, but i also had a check engine light then (loose oxygen sensor i believe it was) but if u have a cel the comp like turns off traction to take less strain on motor and what not i believe. (from what i read)

(offtopic u got any pics of the rsx rims? im curious wut it looks like, pm me a link? =])

Question

yes, i did have a CEL but to me, its completely unrelated.

P0171 (i think) Engine bank 1 too lean.

and i have a whole slew of pics i have to put up that i took since i got the wheels. they need custom hub centric rings but arent giving me much of a problem with that, i think my old wheels were worse

i'll probally have the pics up in a day or so, here is one, and below i'll throw in a link to the album

So today i went for a very short drive. 2 mi. each direction. and when i got in the car to head back home, my CEL was off and so was the traction control light and it functioned as normal. i could turn it on/off with the button and it activated and performed as usual in the rain (it was raining out). what gives? did my ecu just reset it self? i did absolutely nothing to the car to make them go away. i drove it as normal, turned the radio on, opened the sunroof, locked the doors, and thats it. is this a good sign or a bad sign?

I think that if I were you I'd go after that P0171 and then go from there. Check engine lights can make traction control do wierd things sometimes, especially problems directly relating to engine performance like that one, and especially in earlier cars like these. Older cars with slower communications and less-than-perfected engine and traction control software tend to be a bit more vulnerable to problems crossing over between systems like this might be.
