special adapter to check codes on a 95 avy?

Hey guys i am posting this for a friend. We are new to the avalon world as he purchased a nice 95 about a month ago. We just installed the 1 and 2 tranny shift solenoids and are now getting a check engine light and o/d light flashing. We figured this car is obd2 from the ports and from my research but when he took it to Autozone to get a free scan they said the scanner doesnt fit. Is this car obd1 or does it need a special adapter of some sort? I checked on summitracing for scan tools for avalon applications and 1995 does not show up for obd2. Thanks for the help.

I think it would depend on the build date, it was only required starting Jan 1 1996. One website i found showed 1995 model year Avalons should be but you don't know where they got their info.

Supposed to be ODB II but can not state for sure. Does the plug look like the one in the link below?

http://www.obdii.com/connector.html

Check under the hood for a sticker stating ODB II compliant.

Might call a few manufacturers of ODB II scanners and ask if their product will read this year of car, or what is needed to do so.

I have a 1995 Avalon XLS and it is OBD II. I was surprised to see that because the manual said that it was not available until the 1996 model year. Mine might be a late year model and yours might habe been one of the early ones in the model year. Did you look for the adapter on the left side under the dash just above the parking brake pedal? That is where mine is.

The 1MZ-FE in the 1995 Avalon is the first ever OBDII complaint engine in the world. My live data scanner works perfectly in my 1995 Avalon. But smog stations never hook it up to the machine. Required 1996 and newer.

It's OBDII - the connector is next to a small fuse block in the dash. It's kind of an oblong cover to the left of the steering wheel, below a power mirror switch if I remember correctly. Tell the guys at Autozone that their little scan tools will work fine on your car. Better yet, just tell them it's a '96 haha because they're told that they can't 'scan' anything older than that. There's no adapter needed, it's the standard OBDII connector. I'm 99% sure that all '95 Avalons are OBDII because the service manual only has diagnostic procedures for OBDII codes (ie P0135, P0730 etc.) and there is no mention of diagnostics for the older, two digit codes (ie 22, 23, etc.). Hope this helps, good luck.

My '95 was scanned by Autozone. I'll bet your Autozone gave didn't even try.
