Rough Start Up

I have a '97 Avalon with a 'new' dealer supplied (60K miles since install) engine due to sludge problems. The engine runs great but when I go to start the car, the start up is rough with what almost sounds like uneven detonation. It only lasts for the second or so until the car is fully running. I use 87 octane in the car which seems to cause no ill effects. Any ideas as to why the car might be doing this will be greatly appreciated.

if the dealer just installed the engine, i would take it back there and let them figure it out. Should be on their dime.

Sorry for any confusion in my post. The replacement engine has about 60k since installation. I was wondering if maybe I could be experiencing injector issues but the car runs fine and the gas mileage is good.

Sounds like a diesel engine, how is the idle speed? If idea low the Intake Air Control (IAC) valve may need cleaning.

Toyomoho that is a good description of the problem. I recently had the dealer replace the Idle Control Valve due to the car cutting off immediately after starting. That took care of the idle after start issue. Dealer could never get the car to fail but many web posts pointed to that as the problem. I may try a tank full of premium and really confuse things. Thanks.
