I just recently bought a 95 avalon in very nice condition with 110k miles on it.
Its actually my first car and i absolutely love it.
I'm planning on getting a aftermarket headunit, but i dont know if i have a factory amp or not, so i dont know which wire harness to get.
Is there an easy way to tell without opening up the dash?
Also, my clock dispaly is in the same panel as the outside temp display. the outside temp display is fine, but the time is ultra dim, impossible to read during the day, and hard to at night.
Lastly, the interior middle roof light isnt working, it was when i got it, the front 2 personal ones still work. so probably bulb and not fuse?
I'm not sure about the first two, but are your lights on by any chance? That dims the time and makes it impossible to see. Or you need to get someone to fix it cause it sounds like faulty electrical problems. And the interior middle light needs a new bulb since you did tell that your personal ones still work.

It depends on the speaker system in the car. for my 96 XLS with the 6 speaker option the speakers were amplified using a factory amplifier under the dash. I belive the 4 speaker option doesn't have the extra amplifier, someone needs to verify this for me.
Either case, you can purchase an adapter harness. Crutchfield/eBay, wherever suits. Actually if you buy your new headunit on crutchfeild chances are they will supply the adapter harness for you, woot!

You didn't say whether you have an XL or an XLS, but If you have a speaker built into the third brake light housing on the rear shelf you have the six speaker system with a built in factory amplifier. You will need to get a special amplifier bypass adapter harness available at Crutchfield to use another head unit.
If you don't have the above, then you have the standard four speaker system with no built in amplifer. The standard Toyota Camry two piece harness adaptor available just about anywhere (i.e. Walmart) will work to allow you to put in any head unit you want.
For a sample of how to do it step by step, , check out this thread:

Sounds like the bulb in the upper courtesy light is either out or has been bumped off the contact holders (happened to me once), not the fuse.
If you had the built in factory subwoofer it would be a 7 speaker system with the factory amp. My XLS has 6 speakers, 4 mid and 2 tweeters and also houses the factory amplifier, no subwoofer.

Same here, I needed the amp integration harness, I only have 4 door speakers and 2 tweeters.
My bad, meant to type in "seven speaker system" with the built in sub in the 3rd brake light housing. I know for a fact that system has the built in amp, didn't know that the non sub systems had them also.

i have an XLS
finally got around to taking the glovebox out and i do have a factory amp
i thought i had the 4 speaker system but i guess i have 2 tweeters in the back doors, dont really see the point of that, why wouldnt they be in front?
so i have the 6 speaker system with a factory amp.
also after going under the dash and putting everything back together, my clock started working for some reason, bright as the sun too!
