No brake lights

Hello good people,

I was driving behind my mom the other night she was in her 1996 Avalon and i noticed when she stops her brake lights don't turn on. Imediately I check all fuses, and the stop light fuse was burnt at the edges but not broken so I changed it, and it worked. But the next day same issue no brake lights only this time I couldn't shift it out of park and the fuse showed no burn marks and was good as well. So I did some searching and I decided to change the brake light switch, still no lights nor shifting. We can shift out of park by using the override I can live with that but the brake lights will be an issue. If anyone has any suggestions please help me out. Thanks, Travis

I was just poking around my trunk, and thought of the brake light failure module.

I don't know how its wired, but if the current from the lamps passes though the failure module first, ( I observed three shunts in it, and it has power ratings on the box, so I'm guessing it does ) if the connection/module is bad I would think the lamps would not function properly.

Also, did you notice if the rear lamp failure light on the instrument panel was lit? I know when I had the box out of my car and had the key in the on position it was dark.

Good luck good sir

Did you check the fuse and the switch with a meter or test light to see if there is actually power there? The brake lights and the shift interlock are both on the same circuit. And since you had already replaced the switch, we can assume that it is good, unless you had forgot to connect it. It happens to the best of us.

Well I figured out what the problem was and i feel like kicking myself for it, it was the fuse holder was a little stretched out and wasn't making contact with the fuse. Thanks for all the help and quick responses!
