CV shaft seal on 95 Avalon

Hi:

I just replaced the CV boots on the driver side CV shaft on my 95 Avalon with auto transmision and now find that it is leaking fluid where the shaft goes into the tranny.I am thinking that with 150,000 miles the seal needs to be replaced. Is the seal mounted in the flange that is bolted to the side and so if I remove it can the seal be easily replaced? Does the seal leak around this mileage?
Any tips?
Thanks. All help is appreciated.

You have to be very careful when you re-install the axle; otherwise, the spline on the shaft can actually damage the seal.

A couple days late, but what the heck!

The seal would be driven into the flange.

Thanks guys.

I ordered a new seal only to find that I got the wrong one. It looks like most aftermarket listings that call for the left side are actually for the passenger side and the seal for the right side is for the driver side.

Anyway, I removed the shaft again and found that the seal seemed to have some dirt in between the double lips. Thoroughly cleaned it and the shaft, lubed, reinstalled and not a drop so far after a run.

Moral of the story- thoroughly clean the seal and lube before reinstalling the CV shafts.
