Suggestions for Buying Avalon 98

Hello guys

I am recent to this forum. Actually I am planning to buy a 1998 Avalon XLS with mileage 144000 km. The car is in pretty good shape , should say in keen condition. I am just wondering about its reliability and fuel consumptions and experience you have so far. Your honest suggestions would greatly help me deciding purchasing the car. The cost the owner agreed 7500 Canadian Dollar with 4 extra rim with new winter tires. Here in Canada, very few sales I found about Avalon. so I am not sure whether I am paying excessive price compare to its actual values in terms of cost and reliability.

Please suggest me.

Thanks in advance

Leo

Isnt 140000km relatively low? I think KBB prices an 96 Avalon with 75K on it for about 6,000USD. With winter tires the car performs like a beast in the snow. You know, as awesome as FWD can get in the snow. The car should easily pass 400000km/200000mi without a problem when taken care of (oil changes, etc) I get 23MPG (City, some highway) with my '96 with 200K miles on it so your fuel economy should be great. I live near Chicago so driving conditions can be very rough. (-20F winters, 110F summers, hail, you name it, we got it!)

Mechanically its very similar (if not exact copy) of the V6 Camry of the similar year. The motor itself at its creation was on the top 10 of most reliable engines. Citation needed. :P So if you want to save a couple bucks you could score a Camry instead. However the Avalon is the super duper luxury version!

First, thanks a lot for your reply..

The owner actually is my landlord guy. He is so meticulous abou his car. You can't imagine how clean he keeps his car. Thats why in the beginning when I showed my interest about his car, he was started thinking selling it to me and buy a new one. He has more cars, thats why the mileage is too low for that Avalon. He asked $12000 Canadian (I guess around 10000 US). It was 6 months ago, now within he became a very good friend of mine. And everyday I was burgaining and now he become soft enough. the record is clean. He keeps the maintenance regularly. I can assume from his behavior, should say.

I was just wondering because there are very few people here in this town who own an Avalon. Thats why no good or bad comments are there. So you have a Camry V6 or Avalon? which year? 23 MPG, thats simply great!!
If I manage to buy it at last, I will post some photos of it.

Thanks again

Leo

I drive a 1996 Avalon XLS, and I think it is one fine automobile, both form and function.

Ass Jigg states the Avalon is a up scale Camry with a V6.

Suggest reviewing the Gen 4 Camry posts for issues with that car, the Avalon will have similar good and bad points.
