Gen1 Engine cuts off when I slow down

Hey all,

For the past few weeks, I've had to give my 97 avy a little gas when starting to keep it on. After that it would drive fine.

However, today the problem got much worse. On my way home, the engine cut off several times when I slowed down to a stop. I had to restart the car numerous times to get home.

Ideas?

Car has 167k, I changed the plugs, air filter, and pcv about 6 months ago. Plugs are Denso OEM.

Thanks all

Check for codes, even if there isn't a check engine light. Check to make sure the IAC is working properly, located at the bottom of the throttle body.

Where's the OBD 2 connector?

Can I check codes without reader? I don't think Autozone lends them out for free anymore

Probably behind the coin box on the left side of the dash.

If you're not getting a check engine light, it sounds to me like it's the fuel pump.

Do you use a top tier gasoline? If not, Try a bottle of Techron or REDLINE FI cleaner in the tank first.

Then IACV. Then Fuel pump. (as others have said)....

I would go for the Idle Air Control Valve like the others said, maybe it's clogged or busted and the engine is not getting air when the throttle bottle is closed. If the fuel pump was bad, it wouldn't happen only at idle.

The reason why I think it's the fuel pump is that I have seen this exact thing on a few cars. They would run fine, but when idling they would die, and then after a few times just wouldn't start at all.

I would say fuel pump/circuit too. My car's fuel pump/circuit (as I dont know which) is faulty at times and start up would suck since it dies after the crank. It also has the same problems described with the gassing and continuing on after a little while. (mine happens when I dont drive it daily). I say check the fuel circuit (which means bring it to the dealer or mechanic or diy) and get it fixed.

I took off the throttle body and sprayed it like crazy with air intake cleaner. So far, it hasn't stalled yet!

Keep us posted if it acts up again! You probably have it corrected.

Yeah, sorry I forgot about the TB - the bore and the butterfly need to be perfectly clean..... I've cleaned mine about every 90K over the years.
I am not sure it's safe practice to just spray it in there as there are some IACVs (Hitachi?) that have lots of plastic parts that don't like those cleaners. I soak an old T shirt with TB cleaner and just keep wiping everything down until it comes out clean. You need small fingers

Synthetic oil seems to mitigate this problem of buildup on the TB.
