backup lights / backup switch not working

The backup lights are not working on my 1996 Avalon XL. I checked the fuses and bulbs an they are OK. Where is the backup light switch? I have a very limited service manual on CD that indicates it is on the front of the transaxle. Most other cars I’ve dealt with the backup switch is mounted right on the floor shifter assembly. Can anyone confirm where the backup light switch is located? Besides a problem with a broken bulb, wire or switch, any ideas on why the backup lights might not be working? If the switch is mounted on or near the floor shifter, how does the console come out to get to it? If the switch is really on the front of the transaxle, can someone give me more specific information on how to find it? I'm a reasonably experienced mechanic. I just don’t know this car very well. Thanks!

If an autotrans the switch should be part of the Park/Neutral switch behind the shift lever on the trans. This is were the shaft cable runs to. There might be relay between this switch and the lights.

Also check the wiring harness in the trunk where it jumps from the chassis to the trunk lid. The wiring can break due to trunk usage and flexing.

wiring harness

Excellent suggestion. It was the wiring harness in the trunk. Someone had previously removed a 3" section of the plastic protective tubing around the wire bundle. Broken hot lead to backup lights was there. All fixed. Thanks!
