Getting a Crank/No start on a '97

Having an issue with a crank/no start on my friend's '97 avalon. Not exactly sure where to begin on this.

So far ive verified:

I have enough battery voltage.
I can smell gas out of the tailpipe.
Its not starting.

Again, i have no clue where to begin, some help would be nice. Thanks!

its probably the starter if you cant hear the crank. If you can hear it crank, and no start/death after start, its probably the alternator or the fuel pump circuit.

i am currently having the same problem with my 98. my dad went out and bought me a new battery, still no start. he thinks that it may be the fuel pump. if anyone can give any advise on how to fix this i would love it. i feel stuck.

check the starter first. They fuel pump should be only at fault when it starts/dies all at once. Since no crank, and battery is full (12volts), its the starter. The alternator "recharges" the battery (making the battery read ~14 volts). If crank no start, its the alternator. If crank and start but dies or idles poorly, it could be the idler or fuel pump. Hope this helps.

A refurbished starter can be found at pepboys, kragens, etc. Just ask around and see if its in stock.
