O2 sensor not change ok?

I have a 1997 avalon. The engine light came on and it's the front O2 sensor.
Is it ok if I don't change it for awhile? What will if do if I don't.

The fuel injection control system goes into "limp home" mode, which is rich to avoid damaging the motor. You might notice gas mileage goes down, and if left that way long enough, the catalytic converters can be damaged.

The front O2 sensor is really easy to replace and costs about $80.

I'm chiming in a little later here, but I let my front O2 go too long and I'm sure that's what ended up killing my cat. Unfortunately, satisfaction didn't bring it back...

In addition to killing the cat, it also buggers up the traction control system when in limp mode.

oh really? How many miles/long have you driven it? I guess I should get a NEW O2 sensor. I went to a junkyard and got one for $7 from a 93k miles 1995 avalon. Engine light came back on after a handful of miles.

Hrm that's why the Traction is coming on too. Thanks, thought it was different problem.

What do you guys think about just buying a new O2 sensor without the plug. do some cutting of wires.
