I have 110,000 on the vehicle now, time to think about the timing belt, right? Is there a way to assess its condition prior to replacing? I know the prudent thing to do is to replace it, but the cost, oh the cost. I also have a heavy and getting heavier oil leak coming from the back of the upper engine, initial suspicion is the valve cover, but have not had the weather to clean things up and get a better look.
Dealer wants $863 for belt, pump, idler, gaskets. They say 7 hours at $99 + parts. I think a bit much, but I'd really prefer it be done by the dealer.
A closer look and it appears the rear valve cover is clean, it looks like the front, so I lucked out. I'll check the valve clearances and swap the plugs. Thing is, might be a while until I get to the rear, looks like either a costly repair by others or very time consuming.
Bought MBL timing Belt ($30 cdn) & Koyo Idler (28 cdn) from autopartsway.ca. Bought NSK tensioner over ebay for $25.
These are the exact OEM of these components printed on the removed parts from the car. I saved $70 over parts from dealer. Bought other belts, misc seals & water pump ($80) from Mechanicsville Toyota, VA.
My Mechanics had to spend the 1st day working on Exhaust leak in manifold (rear) & changing valve cover gasket (it is a really a hell changing valve cover gasket. I am glad that I have him do it. Had to undo whole load of hoses & connectors along with intake manifold). Mind you he had to greet visiting customers, answering phones etc..,while working on my car.
The following day, he replaced the timing belt & components. Saved me money by sent out the manifold to be welded, instead of putting a used one for $70 (new one cost $320+13% tax in Ontario, while I can have one shipped from Mechanisville for US $170 +$20 shipping). Advice me to be prepared to order new one, if welding doesn't stop leak.
I'm probably not going to change the timing belt unless the water pump or idlers go bad, no sense tampering with something that appears to be working fine. Belts are actually quite well made nowadays.
I agree 7 hours is way out there, especially for a dealer that is doing several of these a week. I bet they can get it done in 4 hours, maybe even less.

Asked $400 for total labour.
Param, the NSK tensioner you bought on ebay was the tensioner bearing, right? I assume you did not need to replace the Timing Belt hydraulic piston belt tensioner?

That's not very prudent. If you're at the mileage to have it doen, then it would be best to do it. Better to have it changed out, then have it break on the Highway with an 18 wheeler behind you.
Did not replace the Hydraulic Tensioner during Timing Belt change

Yes. You are correct. No need to replace the Hydraulic tensioner.

I don't know where you live. However, if you are close to Toronto, Ontario buy all parts for tune-up & take a vacation to Toronto. Being a multicultural city in North America with many garages specialize in Toyota & Honda, you will find private garages who would do these for around $300 or less in labour! Remember, what you saved is after tax money.
