1997 Mirror Replacement

Hey guys! Normally I'm in the camry forums, but I thought i'd hop over here to help a friend out with her avalon. 1997 avalon XLS...the passenger side mirror is completely trashed...at least the insides are. the plastic parts where the motor is are destroyed. does this mean I need to replace the whole mirror? also..where's the best (cheapest) place to get a painted mirror? color code 4M9 (biege). thanks!

Might ask in the Camry forum as the two cars are almost the same, would assume the mirror is the same.

I'm pulling this from memory, so forgive me. And this is what I also answered with on wikianswers.

It will depend if its powered or not.

1) If you have electric mirrors, the window switch panel has to be removed, pry from the top. There is a 3, 4, or 6 wire harness located in that area close to the front of the car. Disconnect it, and it will be difficult. (by the way, the two wire harness is to the speaker system)

2) Pop off the sail panel (triangle shaped plastic part on the inside of door on opposite side of the mirror) Use a flat head screwdriver or a butter knife. You may want to put tape on the end to avoid scratching.

3) Under the panel there will be three 10mm bolts that hold the mirror in place. There may also be an additonal 8mm bolt that has to be removed. The mirror should now be free.
