wiper linkage/transmission bushings

I have a 1997 Avalon and the nylon bushing that connects the wiper motor to the wiper linkage/transmission has failed. The dealer doesn't carry the bushing and wants $200+ for the wiper linkage/transmission. Motormite/Dorman carrys bushings for 2000 and newer Avalons and for Camrys but not 95-99 Avalons. Any ideas out there?

I think that your best bet for something cost effective is going to a junkyard. Either just getting them to give the bushing, or you could probably get the whole assembly for cheap. Also, try searching for the Camry and Solara to see if you can find that part...they might have used the same parts for that since they are very similar cars.

The camry same year did not use the same bushing (I have the bushings prescribed for the same year Camry and they do not fit (Dorman 49448). I did find one at a junk yard but it has a cracked bushing - it may work but it would just be a matter of time before it failed also. Solara is not listed. Thanks for the thoughts.

Have you tried www.car-part.com ? You may be able to find one in good condition and have it shipped to your house.

Good suggestion on car-part.com! - they sure have a lot of parts. I wanted to stay away from used b/c they may have the same issue that mine had (cracked bushing). What I ended up doing was making a bushing out of 1/2 inch schedule 40 PVC pipe. Trimmed it with a dremmel tool (OD, ID and a groove for the ball off the wiper motor) and secured it to the linkage with a snap ring. Seems to work fine...we'll see how long it lasts.

Nice work. Nothin' like at home engineering.
