Pulsing vibration, shimmy when braking

In another thread
Oscillatiing Vibration in 2004 Avalon XLS
the OP was talking about a vibration "that comes and goes every 4-6 seconds" but he was certain it had to do with tires. I've got the same thing but I'm not so sure it's tires.

I've a 1995 Avalon. After a long cross-country trip two months ago I noticed that starting at about 60mph and beyond I get the vibration every 4-6 seconds, not too huge, kinda soothing except that I know it's not supposed to happen. On top of that, if I brake above 55mph the car shimmys. Am I looking at needing new CV joints and brake rotors? I heard the tell-tale "clicking while turning" sound recently so I'm looking to replace the CV joints anyways but should this get rid of the vibration? I'm interested in replacing the parts myself, any ideas what special tools I may need?

If your getting a vibration while cruising, wheel balance is likely your problem. The shimmy your getting while braking is probably warped front rotors. Have a look at your rear brakes as well, whether you have drum or disc. Before replacing your driveshafts, look at the CV boots and see if they're torn or if a clamp is missing. If the boot isn't torn, then your problem is elsewhere. As for replacing the CV's, you'll need a large deep socket for the axle nut (32mm, i think). Unbolt the strut bolts from knuckle and turn the knuckle down to the side. Give the end of the driveshaft a few lovetaps with a rubber mallet or brass hammer then pull it out of the knuckle. You will need a prybar of some kind to remove the spline from the transmission.
