speaker size

I have read on a few threads on here about speakers size for the 97 Avalon people had installed 5 1/4 to the doors my question is why.? Can you just stay with the 4in? and not go to 5 1/4 or is there an advantage to the 5 1/4. I am planning on setting my system up this weekend but not sure if it would make a difference between the normal size or customizing to the 5 1/4?
.

Thanks

Yes, a larger speaker will normally yield better power handling and in most cases, better watt/db effciencies. Not to mention there is a much larger market for 5.25" speakers over the 4". (for your selection)

Now what is your existing sound system like? Do you have the XLS with premium sound? (ie, woofers/tweeters in the doors) Do you have a subwoofer? Radio? What is your overall goal?

If you can provide me additional input I will be able to help you further.

Thanks you for your response this is what I have so far I have a 2 channel 1000 what amp that I will run my 2 kenwood 12" a Alpine IDA-x200 H.U. I wanted to purchase the 5 1/4 speakers but my friend told me that if I took it to a place to get them installed they would charge me an arm and a leg because all the modification they would have to do. I have a 97 xls I dont see a woofer in the trunk all I see is just 4 speaker 2 on each door with the tweeters, and the radio is a stock one with no cd just a tape deck and as far as my second amp for the doors I have not purchased yet im still looking I was just curious how much it will cost me to have it done or is it a simple job and have my brother in law do it in the backyard.

I don't know your level of expertise either, did you have a shop install your subwoofer, or were you able to yourself (or your brother-inlaw)

Seeing how you have 1000 watts worth of subwoofers and the Headunit is only rated for 16 watts on the speaker outputs, I would agree to go with another amplifier for the door speakers. Now are your factory speakers blown at all? in my 96 XLS, I'm all about quality and i think the factory speakers sound great!

So before getting new speakers, I would recomend trying an external amplifier for the door speakers. See how it sounds. I'd say do just the front doors first, and leave the panels off. That way if you still want to upgrade to new speakers, you don't have to disassemble the whole thing again.

Of course the easiest way is to just buy a set of infinity 2ohm speakers that will fit the bill (and hole). For fitting a 5.25 speaker, I don't think there was much required. Maybe just a little trimming, foam, and screws! With the 2 ohm speakers you're able to extract more power from the headunit. And hopefully eliminate any headaches of dealing with extra amplifiers.

It just is two big factors really, time and money.

Any questions, ask. I'm sure i'm forgetting things because its late for me.

Yes my factory speakers are blown I fugure I might as well just throw a whole new sustem in since I already had 2 subs and an ampfrom my previous car but then I read all thiese threads about problems with the wiring and the speaker size. My brother in law has done this before just wanted to make sure is not a hard job were halfway I would have to pack everything up and end up taking it to a shop

It should be something that he is able to do. Just a matter of some trimming, like Jigg said. Get some long screws to fasten the speakers in as well, since it's not mean to have 5.25s in there.
