My wife has an 96 Avalon. She needs motors in the rear. Does anyone know if the motor can just be changed in the assembly or if the regulator and motor have to be changed as one unit. When I tried to remove a motor from the regulator at the junkyard, the motor did not want to come loose from the regulator...it's like I was pulling some copper winding apart. Does anyone have knowledge on this?
Your better of replacing the motor and regulator. There is a pulley and cable attached to the motor. Most of the time the cable either breaks or gets bound up.

Thanks man, but I am still curious about the answer to my question.

Right. Sorry about that. The pulley is pressed onto the motor shaft. Removing it is a pain and getting the cable tensioned is tough. You would need to wind the cable onto the pulley, then push the motor shaft onto it, bolt the motor in place. All without losing tension on the cable. Not worth the struggle IMO. If you do it wrong, a bird nest of cable will be the end result. In short, yes it can be done but its easier to change it as a combo.

Sounds like I need to go back to the junk yard because I cut the cables at the junkyard on my last trip thinking I could just replace the motors....when I tried to take the motor away from the regulator, it was pulling some copper wiring out.
What year range of regulator will work for a 96 avalon rear windows? Will any camry years work too?
92-96 camry would have the same parts. That covers gen 3 and 4 camry which should be the same as the 96 avalvon.

Okay so I went to take the regulator/motor out of the left rear door this evening. Well, I have a problem. The window will not roll down at all. So I took all of the nuts off of the studs but I cannot push the regulator out because it is hitting on the window since it cannot go down. I reached inside of the door and un bolted the window from the regulator and still nothing. Is there a way to roll the window down maually? Anyone have any ideas? I know I could just cut the top stud off of the regulator but I would rather not replace the regulator at this point. I was hoping to just replace the motor to see if that solved the problem since I already have two motors and the regulators cost an arm and a leg. Thanks for any ideas/help.
And I was like Wow ... Now I understand why u dont want to change the whole regulator. I bought a brand new one for my gen3 camry and it costed maybe just 1/4 as much ...
Anyways, I'm writting up a DIY with pictures on replacing window regulator for gen 3 camry folks. Recheck that section sometimes later on.
I know they are supposed to have the same motors but are the regulators the same? I am really not that familiar with the avalon or the 3/4 gen camry's so maybe someone that has more knowledge on this will chime in.
Also even if they are I still need to figure out how to get the freakin' window out or regulator down.
Thanks for the write up., I have changed lots of window regulators so I am familiar with the process. I have never not been able to roll the window down though.
Also finding an Avalon in a junkyard that I can afford in this area is not an easy thing. There are normally plenty of Camrys but the Avalons are hard to come by.
Do any Avalon owners know if the rear regulators in a Camry will fit in the rear of an Avalon?
I'm having the same problem on a 96 4dr Camry (RR door). The motor doesn't work and the window is fully up. Does anyone know how to get the window down manually?
