Cleaning 1996 avalon engine

i have a 13 year old avalon and the engine is filthy. was considering cleaning it but am not sure what precautions to take. any advice on how to clean it ?? Thanks

1. Buy a can of foaming Engine Brite.
2. Take some plastic shopping bags and cover your battery, alternator and distributor(if you have one).
3. Spray on the cleaner and let it sit for 10 minutes. Avoid putting a lot of cleaner on the spark plug boots and wires. Apply more to the dirtiest areas including the firewall, under the intake manifold and around the oil filter housing.
4. Wash down with garden hose set on "Shower". We don't want to blast water into anything like electrical connectors or spark plug tubes.
5. Hood open;let everything dry for a couple hours. Start engine and run for 5 minutes to make sure the water hasn't affected any sensors or connectors.
