P0135 Error after o2 Sensor Replacement

Hey, all.

Car in question is a 1998 Avalon, 198k miles.

Check engine light came on a while back, and diagnostic computer came up with P0135 error code. Just had a local mechanic put in a new o2 sensor for me last night. He reset the ECU, and this morning on my way into work the check engine light came on again. Stopped by AutoZone, plugged it into the computer, same P0135 error.

Assuming that the mechanic knew what he was doing (he replaced the front o2 sensor before the catalytic converter), anyone have a similar issue or know what it could be?

Fuse maybe?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The one at the front of the engine, closest to/facing the radiator.

Look at:

Oxygen Sensor P0135 Code

The wrong (but soon to be worn out) sensor for P0135.

Thanks for that. Are both sensor 1 and 2 the same model, i.e. do I just need to buy another pre-cat sensor like the one I already had installed?

Yes as in same type of sensor. Your car has same length of lead wire.

Sensor 2 is downstream or after the cat.

Check the code because it may be a different problem.

Quite possibly the wrong sensor was replaced. When the sensor goes off the first few times, the time or distance between them is as long as 25 miles. Mine had the same interval at the begining. stayed without failure for a day or two. Then came very frequent. What I did was hoping that this is a one time issue, disconnect/connect battery to clear it. After a week, it became that something was wrong. Ran the scanner, & it was that O2 sensor (P0135) died.
