I have a 1996 Toyota Avalon. Does anybody here know whats the RMS output? The reason im askin this is because I want to upgrade my speakers. Help anyone?
Total output to the speakers is 170 watts, so I would expect an RMS rating in the 15-20 watt per channel ballpark.
My mom's Avalon has a 20 watt RMS / 200 watt peak aftermarket deck in it, and it is a bit overpowered for the stock speakers.
The amps were the same in the cars whether it had the base 4 or upgraded 6 speaker setups, but the speakers were rated for slightly less power in the 4 speaker setup. I am not sure whether the models with a sub had a different amp, or if there is just an unused channel on the 4/6 speaker systems.
The 4 speaker setups have 15w stamped on the back of the speakers, and the 6 speaker setups are stamped with 20w. I assume those are RMS ratings. My Corolla has speakers rated for 17.5w and that's RMS.
Just be advised that the stock amp will NOT power nearly any aftermarket speakers without pretty severe clipping, which will damage the amp and the speakers. Unfortunately, the 95-97 models came without an amp bypass harness, so you'd want to use an aftermarket deck with RCA outputs to an amp if you want to do it properly. I wired the aftermarket deck into my mom's Avalon when it was mine several years back (connected to the output wires of the stock amp), and saying it was a huge pain would be a huge understatement.

Im guessin' Mine has a 15-20 watts on each speakers also, except the subwoofer in the rear. Since I haven't done anythin' to it. So, If i upgrade the 4 speakers in the door with 35-40 watts on each speaker, Do you think my stock deck will be able to handle it? When I turn my volume up the speakers start to rattle lol. So i want to buy those 4 speakers. What do you think?.
The stock amp will power them...but not well. Sound quality really won't be any better...maybe a little crisper highs because the stock tweeters might as well have been made from tin foil...really thin tin foil.
The first gen Avalon is in a tough spot. It has 4.5" speakers, which generally can only be replaced with 4" aftermarket...and I'm sorry, but you're just not going to get decent sound out of a 4" speaker...I've been there many times. Some people have been able to modify the enclosures a bit (try searching for a thread...I know there's been at least one) and have fit some 5.25" speakers.
If you get some 5.25" speakers with a really low RMS rating you might have a shot, but the general rule is that it's better to run stock speakers with an aftermarket deck, than stock deck with aftermarket speakers. But like I said, using an aftermarket deck in a 95-97 Avalon is a royal PITA.
At the point where your speakers rattle now, aftermarket speakers would be clipping the amp, which also sounds like crap, and damages the speakers and amp. The enclosures in the car also weren't designed to handle high power speakers (they are sealed and ported) and you'll hear popping sounds when the air moves too quickly through the ports.
It's your car, and your call, so do whatever you want...I just don't you to invest lots of time and money expecting stellar results. If you have the money to pay a pro to do it, especially if you have them redo the door speaker fittings (of if you have those skills yourself) you can expect much better results.

I'll buy all the equipment and have somebody to run all the wires for me. I don't wanna make a mistake or even burn my car lol. But thanks for the info men, it helped me alot. Keep up the good work. Peace
I hope you end up with something that you enjoy. It ain't easy in these cars, but it can be done.
It would be nice if it was as easy as my old Corolla was, but putting in a cd deck in the Avalon was more work than a new headunit, speakers, amp, and sub combined in the Corolla.

Hey, does anyone know what aftermarket 5.25" would be a good stock replacement for the factory amped 5 channel system? My passenger side is on it's way out.
5.25 won't fit, But if you want to do some cuttin' then they will, just like i did on mine. I have some kickers, which i think they are a good replacement for the stock ones, since you have an amp is much better. There are alot of good speakers out there check Crutchfield.com
