Avalon 97 - Overheating problem

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction.
I noticed about two days ago that the temp gauge (which normally is exactly in the middle) was at about 2/3 way up. I stopped the car, popped the hood and noticed that neither fan was working. The gauge rose up to 3/4 and then one of the fans turned on. A few seconds later the other one did as well. As soon as i hit the highway, the temperature went back to normal.

The same thing happened yesterday and today. There is plenty coolant in the reservoir (even thou it seems it spills out of the top when the temp is high, which i presume is normal?)

It seems to me that the fans / motors are operational, but it seems that they turn on too late?

I would really appreciate your help, so thanks in advance!

Turned out to be the thermostat. I bought the part at the local car parts store and had the mechanic swap it out.

$60 later, the car runs nice and cool. Tested it out in city traffic with AC on for about 30 mins.
