Unhappy 1999 Avalon - Check Engine Light

Ok so today I was driving my car home from school and the check engine light came on as well as the Discharge Warning Light, and the Low Oil Pressure Warning Light.

As soon as those lights turned on my engine completely shut off. I have no idea what went wrong because i pulled off to a parking lot waiting a couple minutes and turned the car back on and it worked fine. Although the check engine light is still on.

Another problem with my car is the BRAKE light turned on (type A) when i drive past 30mph. It turns off sometimes when I turn and other times it just stays on the whole time I am driving.

I am really confused. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim

How many miles do you have? The cel can be diagnosed easily, I use Advance Auto here to check mine when it comes on. That will at least give you a starting point. If the engine dies suddenly, you should see the low oil pressure light on, that is normal. Let us know what you find out.

Also, welcome to the forum!

as far as your brake light goes, check the brake fluid and make sure your not low. also i don't know if you have ABS, if you do it may be a loose wire somewhere on the system. or a sensor going bad. if none of those its probably a symptom of your CEL issue...

Oh oops I forgot to mention.

I have a 1999 Avalon XLS with 117k miles on it.

I checked the brake fluid and its full. I dont think I see any leaks or anything.

How do i get the CEL checked out at Advanced Auto?

Just go in and tell them your cel is on, and ask if they can run the OBD test for you and print out the codes. Then you can research the problem(s) and figure out if you want to fix them or take it to the stealer for repair.
